Going back to older irons

I started back recently and had cb 704's. I wanted something more forgiving without going crazy and don't like the look of a lot of the new thick and delofted irons. The range/course I take my son to takes donations and then resells. I picked up a set of dirty MX-20's with beat grips and some creeping ferrules for $25 with dynalite s300's.

I have a split set that will have a chance to be main gamers (if I don't sell them before then...) that is 4/5 745's and 6-PW 945s.  Look great, but in the past me and their v-soles haven't gotten along, but will have their chance again my Edel's and I210s (but eyeing another set of 760s and T100's...)...  Shame because they look great and a little different in the angles vs. usual rounded MB's out there.

Yes I love the squared off look. Much sharper. They feel unreal as well. Easy to hit for me at my hcp. Jsut got them rawed. They are being built as we speak

Put S56 irons back in the bag recently in order to try to reset my quickly-spinning-out-of-control iron game - like resetting a crashed computer to the last time it worked properly. Afraid of my  ‘99 Hogans and my MP32s don’t have shafts in them at the moment, so the S56 were as old as I could go.

Fingers crossed.

About 2 years ago a good friend of mine was in the market for new irons. He looked at everything under the sun, P790’s, Apex Forged, Mizunos, you name it. In the end he went with a set of 2010 Ping Anser Forged. His argument was that they had the same tech as the 10 year newer clubs, and he could get them for less than half the price. He still games them today and has no intention of changing. I think finding something you like can matter just as much as the tech, especially in the wedges and irons.

Im sure you could find a lightly used set in good condition from 2nd swing or facebook market place or craigslist. Im currently gaming the Mizuno MP-H4s from around 2013, and have a backup set of Nike Forged Pro Combo OS from around 2006 I think? The only thing to watch out for is that many older iron sets will have slightly weaker lofts. PW in the 46-47 degrees and 7 irons with 34-35 degrees of loft.

JP has gone back to his mp15s recently. The modus 120S shaft doesnt feel as good as others he plays, but they are a good club longer that other club/shaft setup he uses. Plus they are easier to flight down.

I am on a budget and have played component clubs until I decided to try some 1999 Titleist 990B's to help me with my hook (little offset and CG closer to the hosel).

Nonetheless, some swing changes(going to the high right shoulder finish) have helped me control my problem with hooking to a great deal so I've decided to play a more forgiving c.b. - a backup set of 1997 Titleist DCI's 962's. I'm excited to put them into play as they are considered among the best c.b.'s ever produced.

"Shirtsleeve" swing technique:

1. Setup: Elbows bent forearms pressed together against shaft slightly forward of center with "Hogan" "active/flexed" leg tension left foot turned out slightly and the right leg slightly farther to the right - weight mostly on balls of feet butt of left hands sits on the top of the grip with very light grip.

2. Swing - W/o disturbing weight distribution of legs and feet lower hands while doing a forward press "swing trigger" then the left upper arm takes over on the backswing, it needs to go out in front of the body then back in front of the chest as the hands trace down initially then up to over the right shoulder "Torres". The goal is to not disturb the pressure of the feet during the initial takeaway.

Notes:

1. Only swing thought after swing trigger - extend left arm at shirt sleeve when reaching left hand over right shoulder "Shirtsleeve technique".

2. The upper left arm move "Shirtsleeve technique" can be practiced independently without a club, sitting down for instance

3. The correct feet tension can be felt by doing very short hops on the balls of the feet then holding the same feeling of pressure on the front of the feet and then taking three practice swings with the grip very loose in order to not disturb the same pressure on the feet and on the 3rd swing actively do the "Shirtsleeve" move. From there the swing should be done within a matter of seconds to not lose the feel of the legs resisting, this way this is not a learned technique as much as it is a setup technique.
