Drive Chip and Putt Equipment

The older kids I’m not so surprised about the custom fit and higher end equipment.  I was just surprised by the 7-9 yo seeing such a driver.  I’d honestly be curious what flex shaft flex you could cut that short to not affect the design of the shaft/have a 38-40” driver not play like a piece of rebar?

Cut down women's/ladies flex shafts or cut down senior flex shafts is what I did in the past.  But my boys have swings speeds that are above the average for their age.  Most of the time, the "made for" shafts will do.  US Kids drivers and woods lack ball speed off their faces, and I had to go a different route.

BTW, I have seen a 10 year old boy who uses this shaft in a SIM2 Driver:

My soon to be 7 yo daughter is on her 2nd set of US Kids.  From my previous club fitting experience, until a kid is strong enough to handle a Nippon 950 R soft stepped, putting them into US Kids was the best option.  Even if they are strong enough we were doing an odd or even iron set for gapping.  I’m sure there are lighter graphite options today than when I was in the business 10-15 years ago, and if a parent has the means and feels that gives their child an advantage more power too them!

I guess my reaction was mostly that I didn’t see the benefit in that age group for a boy or girl playing anything but what I always thought was the best equipment for them in US Kids. Launch monitors and fitting overall have come leaps and bounds which I guess I’ll learn quickly if my soon to be 7 year old kicks butt in DCP after a golf camp this summer!

there are some companies that make junior specific shafts. Check out Flynn golf.

They make high quality shafts for smaller juniors. Throw a TM adapter in it and ready to go w a Stealth head. My now 9 yo daughter has been using these for about 2 years w OEM heads. She plays a Sim2 and we actually swapped some of the head weights for lighter pieces. Light years better than the usk models.

If your butt cutting it you really won't see that big of a difference. The shortest I ever cut was probably 38 if my memory is correct. It was still a noodle after cutting it. To a true technical fitter is it playing stiffer maybe but not enough to have an impact at that speed. Plus weight is a better factor than stiffness especially with kids as there is no standard of what stiffness really is. Take a raw 40-45 cut it down its becomes a noodle which is perfect for kids mentioned above.

A lot of kids on this board has putters worth $400 and drivers worth $800+ doesn't mean we all paid that for it. My kid plays a GD but I didn't spend anywhere near retail for it. Plays a $400 putter that I didn't pay that. With TV attention these kids get a lot of stuff that you wouldn't even believe.

And then there was the kid last year who did pretty well with an Old Bullseye putter. In fact my pro's son told me he asked the kid if he knew me? Or at least that was the story told around our course. I saw it myself on TV and the announcers talked about it too. We were at the course watching and when they showed it I commented it was a bulls eye and then the announcers alluded to it

Probably easier to compete with an old school putter than old school driver...but its cool to see a kid out there with that. I'd love to see a kid roll out with a persimmon.

I would too but in reality it would be exactly like you said. The kid or anyone else for that matter would give up too much with the persimmon. I know because I play persimmon quite a bit and when I do I move up one set of tees. Now days in honest reality I am 20 to 25 yards shorter with the lumber than I am my modern driver. I do practice quite a bit with either one of my Bullseyes or Ironmaster putters. If one can hit one of those constantly in their dime sized sweet spot good then a face balanced putter is a no brainer.
