Visiting Toronto

Toronto is interesting for golf, the further you drive out of the city the more value and quality you get for your dollar.

Look at TPC Toronto, it's north west of the city about about an hour depending where you're staying and when you head up there. They have 3 18 hole courses and are all rated in the top 50 or 100 public courses in Canada so you can easily play 36 holes with ease if you get up there early.

If that's too far of a drive there is Piper's Heath just west of Toronto, much easier to get to I think a very nice and underrated public course in the area, one I hope to play often this year since I work around the corner from it.

Just north east of Toronto there is Angus Glen, I haven't played it but heard it's really nice, on my list to play, further east from that is Watson's Glen which I've heard has a great reputation and conditions as well.

North of the city you have a corridor of great public courses like Eagles Nest, Copper Creek, Nobleton Lakes and maybe Woodington Lakes but that's an hour drive easy and they have done some hole redesign lately.

So that's 10 courses there to look at, plenty more as well but these are the bigger ones so look into them and see what you like. My only suggestion is don't play Glen Abby it's overrated and overpriced.

Hi Canada pals

I’m heading to Toronto for work at the end of May from the UK - first time in Canada.

I’m going to have a few days off for golf and would love some tips on courses to play that book singles (or better still if anyone fancies a game!)

I should ask first where in the Toronto area you are working and staying? There are good courses as was already mentioned north, east, and west (Lake Ontario is south).

I also recommend TPC Toronto’s 3 courses, they are very nice and very walkable. The Heathlands is a links style and is my personal favourite of the 3. As stated above, Glen Abbey is overpriced.

There are several good courses especially if you don’t mind driving a little. If you give more information, including your budget, we can make more targeted recommendations. Toronto and the Greater Toronto is quite a large area and most of the good courses are at least a 30 minute drive.

thanks for the replies - TPC looks perfect.

I’m staying downtown and am thinking of tacking on a few days to golf.

any opinions on going further afield to Muskoka Bay or Cobble Beach and staying out there for the weekend? Quite happy to rent a car and explore a bit.

Muskoka looks super Canadian and that would be rad - hotel reviews aren’t so hot though.

Following as I grew up the area and coming out for a visit this summer. TPC Toronto looks like a really good deal.

As someone who worked in the Pro Shop at Glen Abbey when I was younger, I still appreciate being able to play there almost every day for free. No idea what it costs now and sounds like I don’t want to know.

Let's just say you can play 36 at TPC Toronto for the same or less depending when you go.

You can always play Muskoka Bay and then head up to Rocky Crest Resort which is also a great course. It's private, Clublink, but if you are stayng there, you get access to the course.

Is Musoka Bay public? They list rates around 175 on their web site. Is this for members or the public? Coming from NC. Is it worth a trip to this area or just play in Toronto? Any good value options in Musoka area?

It's public, but they reserve some early morning tee times for members, probably the best public course in the area. but is a busy course June-Sept. Muskoka is pretty high end real estate and golf, some good publc courses, Deerhurst, Taboo, Ridge at Manitou and Seguin Valley.  If you have any private course connections, ClubCorp, look into Rocky Crest or Lake Joseph Club.

The area is busy on weekends and the traffic can be bad going north on Fridays and south on Sundays.  Look into TPC Toronto, three great courses, depening on where you are staying, it's about an hour outside the city.

As everyone else has stated, TPC Toronto is far & away the best option in my opinion. Their replay rate is pretty good if you want to play 36 holes in a day. My issue with Glen Abbey a few months ago was that the conditions weren't very good. Similar to my experience at Angus Glen.

Eagles Nest is a good track with great views of the city.
