Hudson Made Putter

Recommended Posts

So, I bought a putter from a machinist on Reddit's r/golf forum. He posted a few samples of his work and I really liked the look of the pintail model he shared. After I designed and milled my own putter as a gift for my father, I was intending to make another for myself but don't have the time to do it anymore. Swapped a few messages with the guy, bought a carbon steel head with the intention to blowtorch it to a unique finish and game it. Standard loft and lie, with a milled face and right on a weight spec I'd be targeting if I made a weighted model for myself. I just ordered a carbon steel head (better for blowtorching), and have a shaft. Bought a putter rubber underlisting from ebay for $5, and used some bike bar tape wrapped around it for a nice faux-leather strapping vibe. Plus I've built a few bikes so that is a very personal touch.

After a few bad blowtorching attempts I got tired of sanding and I got it coated in Cerakote "Blue Titanium" from a local shop here, and paint filled it myself. Initially wasn't in love with the Cerakote finish, as its a little too matte/flat for my liking - but once I got it out into the sun I love the way it shimmers. I recommend checking out the video to see that effect.

I highly recommend dealing with the guy who made it because he was super attentive to detail and now that I've milled one myself I can say he is very good at his work. And he's Canadian. 🇨🇦

Is this the dude who was selling heads fresh off the mill at a very low cost? I thought about picking up one or two to mess around with but never got around to pulling the trigger.

Looks nice though. Have you noticed a difference in feel since having it Cerakoted? All the ones I have ever done come out feeling slightly clicky after the finish has been applied.

Thank you for posting a review and images of your handsome putter. Stumbled upon his IG account and am close to finalizing details on an upcoming project.  Communication has been exceptional thus far. I will update when all is complete.

I picked up a Hudson made blade, I sent him specs of something I had but sold and he was able to put it together fairly quick at a very reasonable price! He customized it exactly to my preferences after we had some good conversation back and forth over email and instagram. 5 stars, highly recommend!

Thank you to those in this thread, and on IG, who have provided inspiration.

My Hudson finished today (inside the window of two weeks I was quoted) and will ship next week. Communication has been exceptional.

I will add a few more thoughts when the putter arrives, but have been sent a few images that I will share below. I gave Hudson some artistic freedom and he more than delivered. Hard to see, but the maple leaf in the buffed heel contains the Hudson name.

That's a sweet shape and looks very well done, looks like we have a solid putter maker in Canada if the prices are right.

Totally agree.

When you factor in shipping, exchange, taxes and potential border fees, it’s a no brainer.

Very reasonable.

I should probably do that too before it's too late his work is quite clean to begin with.

My Wesley arrived yesterday and is now shafted and ready to roll. Really fond of the softened lines. Two tone finish and buffed heel.

Such a positive experience from the first IG correspondence to the delivery of the finished product.

Head arrive with a a Maggie’s collection tartan cover and a few stickers. Was well protected.

No glamour shots yet but I got a couple progress pictures of my putter last week.  Mike has been awesome to work with, he caught a mistake after doing the first dip of black oxide on my carbon head when the neck didn't take any color and he realized it was stainless.  Offered to chop off the neck and remake it with carbon but I actually really like how the two tone looks.  I plan to let the carbon patina so it will be super interesting to see how things end up looking after some use and the patina starts.

My putter is done and on the way!  Mike went above and beyond to meet the weight spec I was looking for.  After the neck was added the putter was at 393g, just under the 400g-425g target weight I had.  Mike then welded and ground down the sole, adding 10g to the final weight.  The adding of weight was done so well that you can't tell the putter didn't come off the mill like it sits now.

I can't wait to shaft this baby up and hit some putts!

Putter came this morning and it was love at first putt.  I shafted it up with my Stability Shaft, but with a longer tip than I had in my PXG so the putter plays 44.75".

My putting practice routine is to roll 10' putts to get a feel for the green speed, so I did just that and dropped the first putt dead center.  I took that as a good sign and went into my full on course routine, aligning the line on my ball, one practice stroke, step in and putt.  Did just that and dropped the next putt, and the one after that, followed by another7 straight before lipping one out.

I moved into 40' lag putts and speed control was great, left almost every ball in tap in range.  This has always been the hardest part of armlock putting for me, but I instantly had so much confidence in this putter it felt second nature.

I need to grab a picture of the headcover too because I'm definitely a fan of it despite being Velcro

I'd love to hear an how you're getting along with the Hudson. Also curious, how much toe hang does it have? Looks close to face balanced right?

I'm loving the putter still.  I roll damn near every putt true on the line (as judged by the line on my ball) which gives me lots of confidence and as a result I make a lot of putts inside 8 ft.

The single layer of black oxide is wearing off and I'm getting a bit of the patina on the carbon that I want.

The toe hang is about 20*.  That became the target for toe hang after using my Blast Motion on a face balanced putter (which I tended to leave the face open with) and a 45* toe hang putter (which I tended to leave the face closed with).

Second Hudson set to arrive tomorrow.  A Canada themed Trebek to add to my Wesley. Simply asked for a putter that was ‘Canadian cool’ and left the rest to the artist. Fantastic experience again.

I will borrow Mike’s IG photos until I can add a few of my own.

So pleased with the final product. Raw carbon, bead blasted head, that I plan to let age naturally. Really like the setup at address.
