Taylormade sim2 max fairway face

Hi all,

I just wanted to get people’s thoughts on this

i bought a sim2 max 3w 9 months ago, and like it. However in the last couple of weeks a few wierd things have happened to the face.

the first was when I hit a shot off the deck, and the ball made a strike mark on the face (slightly high and toe side) - bearing in mind I hit it from the fairway, the ball almost made an explosion mark on the face. I don’t hit it hard at all (driver ss 100mph) so I don’t think it should’ve done that.

then about a week later, I played a round where it rained a couple of times, but nothing too heavy. Got home, dried everything and left the headcover off. Next time I played I noticed that the face has lots of spots on it (almost looks like patina on a wedge/putter) which appear to be small bits of rust which are all over the face.  you can even see that it’s rusting on the twist face lettering!!

i took it back to the shop who initially said I was being picky and tried to clean it with WD40, which made no difference. But I said that I didn’t think that something like this should happen to a club that’s 9 months old, especially when my M2 driver is 5 years old and is fine!

the shop have contacted TM, but I haven’t had any response.

am I being really picky? My worry is that it might be a sign that something bigger is wrong with the face, and if I don’t do something now and it breaks in 6 months, they’ll then say that it’s out of warranty and tough luck!

I only hit my 3w twice a round, so it just seems a bit rubbish for a club that’s likely hit less than 100 balls!

I dont think it's the wear mark from hitting a ball he's worried about as much as the what appears to be rust marks on the face. I have wear spots on all my clubs too but none of them have rust marks near them.

*to clarify, I think what you called an 'explosion' looking mark is normal.

hi, yes, I appreciate that wear marks are completely normal and very happy to have that (and envious of the very good wear marks above)!

it’s the small spots nearer the heel (and all over the face) which are of more concern, as they seem to be rust spots.

My cousin's TM MC TP irons from way back when started getting rust spots on the face but that was many years after he got them.  Your SIM 2 MAX shouldn't be rusting like that so soon.  TM may or may not replace it but you have a legit concern/case.  Just remember to wipe down your clubs with a dry towel after every round and practice session.

IMO the finish on TM’s FW’s and hybrids is just not durable and it’s likely done as a cost reduction. If you’re in a dry environment it might be considered “a look”, but if you’re coastal or other rust-inducing environment, you will get rust. I tend to clean the face with a blue scotch brite, which does a fair job of removing surface rust.

Nothing looks out of the ordinary.  Every TM fairway wood I've had in the last few years has worn that way.  Are the Sim max faces titanium like the regular Sim?  If so it's very unlikely that's rust...

No it’s a steel face, and is definitely rusting.

The finish on any Taylormade clubs isn’t durable these days.

The face is supposed to be titanium which does not rust.

Wait, sorry. I was wrong. It is a form of steel. My bad! For what it's worth, mine looks similar, but without the rusty bits.
