Out of curiosity what does it cost to refurb 1 wooden driver with Dave?

Dave isn't taking new customers at present.  The cost depends on what is needed to be done.  Let's just say it is a lot more than most people spend on an old wood.  While I am not going to say what I spend for Dave's work, it is more than most people charge but then again Dave's work has very few peers.

Man, I'm learning new things from you guys. I didn't know there's  persimmon collectors.

Honestly I just want to have 1 or 2 to play with and not collect.

But I absolutely appreciate the collectors here.

I'll post here again if I ever got lucky and find some really good condition ones.

QUESTION: I SEE SOme have ver long brittle plastic ferrules and some are wires, which is newer and better?

Never be intimidated.  If something catches your eye and you want to collect that something then work at the collection one piece at a time.  That’s as my goal after I decided what make, model and era of woods I wanted in my collection.  It took many years to get to where I’m at now. I’m taking a break from collecting for the next year or two but will eventually get back into it.

If I ever get to grace this bag with a collection a tenth as good as RobotDoctor's I will be a very happy man!

It is actually the last and most elusive in my staff bag collection - these are very scarce on this side of the pond.

I hope to fill each with my favourite set from each manufacturer and decorate my home office with them. Negotiations with Mrs Foozle are at a very delicate stage! 🤞

Just wondering... can a decent golfer still score in single digits playing a wooden wood and irons from that era?

And would the sticks hold up from a very aggressive swing?

Sure.  There were no game improvement irons and tungsten inserts in the 70's and there were still scratch golfers about.

Well I have these 2….

what can I do about them?

the Hogan 3wood has this protruding leading edge that looks like a chin and it’s weird to my eyes.

Not sure what you are calling the "chin" unless the sole plate is damaged.  According to the gents at Louisville Golf, the Hogan woods suffered from using not good epoxy for the sole weights that are under the sole plate.  The weight comes loose and just acts like a hammer on the inside of the sole plate deforming it over time.  You don't have pictures of the correct areas on the Hogan to determine whether or not it is playable.  Show the sole, the face and the neck.

These 2 that I have... it'll cost a lot to restore huh?

Not terrible through Louisville Golf depending upon what you need done, but you can likely find a perfectly gameable club at goodwill, on ebay, or facebooks marketplace for less.

Not even close to worth it.

Not if you just want one to tinker with.

Check those places I mentioned above.  Don't spend more than 10 bucks per club and get 1 or 2 and try them out.  If you don't like them put them back on FB marketplace or ebay and sell them.

The whippings I have seen are either heavy plastic (nylon?) thread (like a thin weedwhacker string) or an actual thread that has been dyed and waxed (much older clubs).  The plastic feeling strands is newer.  I don't think either is really better.  What the difference is the newer the club the more likely the epoxy used is stronger/adequate.

You also posted something about shafts along the way.  You could get all flexes of shaft in the steel shafts in persimmon and laminate woods.  Ladies flex all the way to X-stiff and perhaps beyond.  Search and you can find stiff flex woods and not have to pull a shaft.  I don't think you want to attempt re-shafting a real wood unless you just have the skill or need to.  For a tinker club I would suspect you can wait to find a shaft you like.

I have some clubs I would sell.  Can't do them for $10 as they cost me more than that and the shipping was probably more.  I have a Penna, Cobra and a whole bag of Powerbilt woods and scotch irons I am not playing.

The "best" is such an ambiguous term regarding persimmon or laminated woods.  If you want to play with woods any number of woods would suffice and would be fairly inexpensive.  If you want the best then you're looking to collect which brings woods to a whole other pricing level.  Some of the collector pieces will cost upper hundreds to low thousands of dollars.  If you simply want the best I would focus on 1940/early 1950 MacGregor pro line woods, Wood Brothers, 1950/1960 PowerBilt pro line, just to name a handful of brands and eras.  If you want inexpensive, any laminated wood from the 1980s or lesser brands from the 1970s/1980s/1990s would suffice.  Ebay is full of inexpensive gamers, some being older, more sought after persimmon.  Best if luck in your search.

The following pictures are from my collection (office staff bag as posted several times before), my 1952 MacGregor M85TW driver, my 1955 MacGregor 945W driver (special EDO finish), one of my 1950 693 drivers, and one of my M43Ts.  It has taken me years of diligent searching and a bit of luck to find many of the woods in my collection.

@Foozle, thank you for the compliment!  I certainly appreciate the compliments from fellow golf enthusiasts.  My collection took years to formulate and find the pieces that were added.  I am extremely fortunate to come to know @freddiec and discuss, learn and obtain some of my earlier pieces.  Fred has become one of my very good friends and I always appreciate dialog with him.  Because of Fred, I came to know Dave Wood.  At first as a client but that relationship soon turned into a terrific friendship.  It is because of the incredible talent and eye of Dave Wood that my collection is where it is.  With regard to my oversized PowerBilt display staff bag, this was a very fortunate eBay find and I snagged it up quickly.  I don't even remember what the price was but it wasn't too bad.  I definitely need to add a nice, collectible Citation driver in my bag to give the bag some justice.  When I get back into collecting I will learn and search for a great collectible Citation.

A pleasure, it is a fabulous collection which I admire for the quality aswell as the dedication that assembled it.

I also covet FreddieC's wonderful collection. I have exchanged a few messages with Freddie both here and on his You Tube channel where I enjoy watching him hit some fantastic clubs.

I have described Freddie as mildly irritating as he has a great collection, swings very well and the sun always seems to be shining wherever he is! 😁

I just bought a 1-7 ping eye 2 for $15 a piece.... wish the guy would let me just buy the 1 and 3 only -_-

So what ball do I need again? Do I need to steal a chicken from the farm a block down to pluck the feathers and stuff it into a leather ball or something?

I'll just use normal balls like V1x and Penta TP.

Btw, anyone wanna take the 6 and 7 off my hand for what I paid for?

Any ball? The two piece balls were destroying wooden headed clubs for fun which gave impetus to the metal head dirver developments.

Unbelieveable!

It was not the 2 piece balls per say but the Surlyn covers at the time. Those balls would destroy a pressed fiber insert. And yes if you got a lot of out of insert toe hits it would wreck the toe. Now the hard plastic inserts it did not seem to affect any. I play any of the modern balls with my Slugger or my MT 1W because both have plastic inserts. Now my one set of prized Izettes have fiber inserts and I do not hit anything but balata with them
