MEMBER REVIEWS: Fujikura VENTUS TR Red and TR Black! See What Members Are Saying!

Did you notice your contact with the new black moving up on the face a bit?  Could be less deflection so the face is coming in a little closer to the ground.  Would explain the drop in spin too.  Reason I ask is that is what I ended up seeing when I felt brave enough to hit the Trono 6X.

I have been thinking this is maybe a reason.

As long as the efficiency is there and you're not hitting the forehead it could be a great thing!

Alright guys first off thanks again to @Fujikura Golf and @GolfWRX for allowing me to do this review. Also thanks to Club Champion for giving me the ability to provide these numbers. I’m going to list some numbers with different setups below. I compared the TR Red to the TR Black and the AD HD. All shafts were 60g class and S flex. Feel wise both TR’s felt just as you would imagine, very stiff in the handle. The Red had a nice feel at the top and a pronounced kick at the bottom. The Black felt much more linear with a bit of a sense of the shaft loading at the top but no real feel of it releasing at impact. That said ball speed was right there at the top. Comparing either of these two to the AD HD made that thing feel like a noodle. I just wanted that shaft to be included to get a sense of how stable the butt and middle were in the TR’s. I am playing twice between now and Monday so I will report back on the on course part of the review.

Which TR did you receive?  I am liking that TR Red/TSR4 combo in those numbers.  Looked like some of them were kind of hovering around a 2 way miss.  The TR Red seemed to at least keep you on one side of the grid.  Numbers look good with the weight back.

If you had to pick one between the black and red, which way would you lean?  Which one feels more comfortable to you?

The Red is the one I was given to test. Honestly both felt good. The Black I felt like I could really release at the bottom, which is maybe why I actually hit that one more down the left side. The Red had a nice little feeling of the shaft loading at the top which I did not get with the Black. I also felt like I would lose the Red a little right more right but don’t know why that was happening.

Very interesting talking about not feeling the black load. And I would assume you losing the red to the right has all to do with deflection in the shaft. Ian from TXG normally plays tip stiff stuff but when he reviewed the TRs he was smoking the red because the tip was so active it was almost like his engine for him

Yeah I feel like the exact opposite should be the case. I thought for sure the Black would be the one I would lose right and if anything wanted to go left it would be the Red. I would assume it has to do with where I’m releasing the head.

All the more reason you have to get fit for em, as much as we want to see a new shiny toy and say ohhh that’s low spin? That’ll be perfect.  You just never know til you hit it.

what shaft are you coming from before the TRs?

Recently a TR Blue in a Rogue St LS, which I really liked except the Rogue head looked so closed. Then I had a RDX Black in the PXG.

Nice! Interested in how you find it to play.  If your signature is accurate, you're coming from the original red?  That is one that I liked the feel of but just could not dial it in for my driver.  Perfect in my fairways though!

Yes. Have the OG Red in my driver. I like it, but to be honest find it a bit inconsistent at times, as there are times it spins a bit too much for my liking. That said, my dispersion has been great so there's certainly a give and take. Excited to give the TR Red a test and see if some of the spin issues are better and also see if the feel is similar to the TR Blue because that is one of the best feeling shafts I've played in a long, long time.

I think it’s feels a lot different than the TR Blue. You can feel the Blue hinge in the middle. The Red you can just feel the bottom 1/3 move at all, for me anyway.

I'd agree with that as well.  Haven't swing TR Red, but TR Blue and OG Red, would agree with how you described the feel.

I am a big fan of the TR Blue.  But, I do like a stiffer handle.  I am not quite in the black territory though for shaft load.  So, I was really hoping the OG Red was going to work because it felt pretty good throughout the swing.  I just could not time it for the life of me and would just hit massive blocks.  I know it's a big ask.  But, I am kind of hoping the TR Red plays similarly to the OG Blue but with a stiffer handle.

Just got back from a pretty quick range session. Was too excited to wait and had to give it a few swings. For context, I am gaming an OG Red 6S and the TR Red is a 7S. Here's my initial thoughts:

I don't have numbers to back these up. Just what I perceived with my eye.

  • launch appeared to be a tad higher, which was surprising given the added weight
  • very smooth feel, but different than the TR Blue
  • ball flight felt more consistent. would echo what @QuigleyDU said in his review of the Black that the ball just wants to go straight. I hit one ball off the heal that really moved right, but other than that the ball was a very consistent 5-7 yard fade, which is what I like to see off the tee

I'm hoping to get out for a longer session this evening after I pick up the kids from school, so I'll post a few more thoughts then. I may even try to play 9 holes to see what it's like in that setting, as I'm not much of a range rat anymore.

Let me know if anyone has any questions. Happy to do my best to answer.

To be OG blue and the TR Red? I mean, I wouldn’t expect them to feel very similar. I guess what I was eluding to is a strong mid launch flight but with he tighter feel in the handle. I’ve tried the Og black. It isn’t a great match. It’s not awful or anything. But I like a little more give and to feel the shaft bend a bit. The tr blue is great because it has that feel while being pretty stable for me.  The red had a crispness to it. But the results seemed like it was way too soft. I guess my hope is that it can provide some more stability while maintaining what I consider a crisp feel in transition.

I TOTALLY agree on the feel of the TR Blue. I told the fitter that it reminded me of the OG Diamana Blueboard. Just great overall feel, but still great stability without feeling too boardy.

Haha, makes perfect sense. My brain is churning lately on what I want to do with my driver and 3w.  I was thinking Red TR in driver.  But, the idea of a more forgiving, higher launching head paired with a stout Ventus Black TR is growing on me.  Swing changes have been sticking and it may be time to shift things around a bit.

I am thinking of moving my TR Blue into my next 3w.  Heading into silly season once the courses close in the next few weeks.  Who knows what kind of dumb ideas I'll have between now and the start of the season next year haha.
