Ride, walk, and pushcart friendly... Is there a bag unicorn??

Recommended Posts

I have purchased so many bags over the past years.  I currently only have 4 at home in my stable, and currently only really use one.

The 4 bags I have kept for various reasons over the years are :  Ping Hoofer (mine is a '19 model), Ping Hoofer Lite (current model), Vessel Player 3 DXR, and Vessel VLS DXR

VLS DXR have risent to the top for me this year.  It really does everything. It carries great, it fits in my ClicGear 4 with no issues, and it is more than adequate when riding.  It really has become my unicorn bag.  I do wish it had a cart-strap pass-thu, but the location of the zippers minimizes that concern, and honestly I do not dig in the smaller "wallet and keys" pocket very often at all in a round.

Can someone point me in the direction of  something I remember seeing about an adapter that helps a stand bag sit better on a pull cart. Just went on a trip using the cheap uk pull carts and the stand bag constantly tipping sideways and coming off was annoying.

The best thing I know of is the Bag Cozy that Clicgear sells.

Do you have issues with rubbing the VLS on your ClicGear 4?

Before reading the review below, I was ready to pull the trigger on a black friday deal (if there is one.)

The only issue I expeienced with this bag is that the base of the bag is not actually solid.  There is a logo’d vinyl material on the bottom which reduces weight, but also flexes if the bag is riding on a Clicgear cart.  The base then rides a little low and rubs on the front wheel over the course of a round and needs to be readjusted a few times to eliminate the rubbing.  That isn’t the case for all push carts, just the Clicgear.

No, I make sure the bottom strap is nice n tight. I also try to have the top straps “hold it up” utilizing the adjustment feature of the CG4.

I should also add that I utilize Alphard EWheels V2 on my CG4 w the 4 wheel conversion…. So rubbing the front wheel really isn’t an issue for me.

I guess it depends on which pushcart. I use a bagboy quad and it is fantastic. Awesome lightweight setup. The quad has a cutout for the stand mechanism.

That depends a lot on your push cart. The Clicgear system can be a mess with many bags but the Bag Boy Quad is very friendly for bags like the 2.5+.

I’ll cop to being unfamiliar with the Bag Boy Quad.  Bag Boy is a good company; if they made it compatible with Sun Mountain stand bags, good on them!

I can't speak for the other Bag Boy carts, but their quads are as good as it gets. The footprint is smaller than a Clic and only one strap is needed to hold the bag in place. The design also holds your bag more vertical so you get less club binding and a little more stability.

Such an interesting thread. Last year I switched from the SM 2.5 to the Hoofer CEL (I walk exclusively) and I HATE the CEL. Club tangle is a nightmare compared the the SM (not a huge deal most of the time but get a little irritated after a bad shot and the club tangle just amplifies it). The Ping feels like it has less storage, is worse in the rain, I don't find the straps that comfortable and the material especially around the base is fragile. Usually keep a bag for 2 years, but already looking at going back to a SM 2.5 or 3.5 or maybe a Vessel or GFORE (Vessel). One thing I cant get over is the vessels have such a small opening, how to clubs not tangle all the time?

Hey bluedot, I think you mean the Clicgear Tour Bag Kit (https://www.clicgearusa.com/collections/clicgear-accessories/products/clicgear-tour-bag-kit). This is what I've been using on my Clicgear 3.5+ which allows my golf bag to be positioned in a more upright spot.

Upright is not the issue with stand bags. The problem is that the legs at the the top of the bag do not allow the bag to sit comfortably in the saddle. The bag tends to rotate sideways.

Last year I bough 27 bags. All stand bags. Also bought three different push carts.

Kept tags on everything. Never took them on the course and returned the ones that I didn’t like.,but I did load them all up with clubs. Weighed them all and put them all in a push cart. Carried them around my yard.

i was coming from a PING Hoofer 2.

I kept 3 bags: Hoofer Craz-E-Lite, PING Hoofer and Vessel VLS.

The cart I kept was the Caddy Tek 3 wheel cart. Best neck/top support system of all the carts. Stabilizes the bag so well.

I walk 90% of my rounds. Ride the rest and rarely rake my push cart. Push cart is for rainy day Tournaments.

the PING Hoofer is the best all around bag when you consider storage strap system, the cart pass though and it fits exceptionally well in any push cart.

the cart strap pass through makes the bag very good on a Tenp-o-walk as well.

don’t get bags with stand mechanism the are are not built into the bottom. Like on the Sun mountain bags…. They don’t sit well on push carts. Get a solid base.. plus this kick stands always break.

it is a little heavy to carry, but doable if you pack it light. Don’t fill the pockets. Carry 6 balls… etc….

The Hoofer Craz-e-lite is the lightest carry bag ever. Plus the strap system is so good. Good storage too for such a light bag. But it is a pure carry bag. It’s not great on a push cart or driving. The structure is too light and the driving cart straps make it tough getting clubs in and out….. but it’s doable.

impossible to use this bag well on a Temp-o-walk.

both bags are good because they have a rain hood built in. But the Hoofer CEL is not water resistant at all. Stuff get soaked with a light rain.

Ths is the ultimate Sunday bag. It’s so light. They 2+pound makes a difference. Is only 3lbs with straps. Use it for tournaments too and easily handles a full 14 clubs with mid size grips.

enter the vessel VLS. A Unicorn bag it’s weight is right between these other two bags. The strap system is the best ever made. Carries so light. Look at all the threads on this bag.

Wait for a sale…. It’s worth every penny. they do a big Black Friday one every year.

You can carry, ride or push with this bag.

the material is also very water resistant. The rain cover is not attached, but I have walked in pretty heavy rain with this and everything stays dry.

avoid the Lux line. It’s heavier and the material is not as durable as the standard VLS, especially on riding carts. They do look sweet though…

downside is that it has the least storage. I am a light packer though. Carry 10-15 tees, a towel, 6 balls and a Gatorade or Poland spring bottle and my cell phone/keys, range finder. Sometimes a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

has room for a light jacket.

Water bottle pocket fits any Gatorade or Poland spring bottle…. But won’t fit hydro flasks and bigger diameter bottle…. But seriously… if you walk regularly, you should not carry this much water…. It adds too much weight. Refill on the course a smaller bottle. This aspect is not relevant to a push cart b/c it has its own water holder.

If rain is forecasted , I attach the rain hood to the neck and keep it rolled down.

never wished I needed more room.

if I was to pick 1 bag- vessel VLS.

no contest.

MGS does a great job on their tests of bags. Their spec weights are very accurate too..

all the other bags I returned either had cramped tops, carried poorly, ill fitting straps….. etc. I was so disappointed by Sun mountain. They just don’t sit right on my back. Down right uncomfortable.

I have had it all, so ask any questions.

I am curious if you tried a Shapland stand bag. I just got a 2.3 and IMO it’s fantastic. It may technically weigh a pound+ more than the Titleist Players 4 Stadry it is replacing but it carries better. The build quality is phenomenal and while the leather and metal accents on the straps weigh more than their vinyl and plastic counterparts they are far more enjoyable to actually use.

Admittedly, they are pricey but this bag appears well built enough to outlast multiple traditional vinyl bags. I suppose time will tell if ends up being a great value but IMO it’s definitely a great product.

No doubt… have seen them.

this experiment was done utilizing a major retailers generous return policy….all the bags were returned in pristine and technically unused shape…. Carried them around my living room and garage.

the shapland at 5,5 lbs is on par with the Ping Hoofer. While it’s a really cool bag, the functionality of the Hoofer is unmatched.

I am curious though, if you have tried both, how does the shapland strap system carry relative to the Hoofer??

Do you get club tangle when the stand is engaged?

can you give us a final weight with straps? Put it on a scale…. Or weigh yourself on a scale holding it and then without it.

the shapland material and straps remind me of the Hoofer 2.0 I have. One of my favorite bags.

the material on the shapland though look like they blow the Hoofer out of the water.

can you post and share some good detailed pics of the bag and interior pockets. The website does not do a good job of this.

The 2 bags that I have are the Jones Trouper R and the TM Vessel bag that was released last summer.

Out of the 2, the Jones is better for walking because of the cooler pocket.  The Vessel bag sucks for walking because of the water bottle holder being so small.  You can only fit a small bottle of water on there, so if it's a course that doesn't have water jugs everywhere, you're going to be hurting.  I've walked 9 with both with no issues with weight, and I've walked 18 carrying a few times with the Jones, and there were no issues there either.

Both bags fit fine on a golf cart pushcart.  I have the attachment from Clicgear to keep the bags from moving, so there's no issues there.

My other favorite bag that I've used is the Ogio Fuse 1st edition that was released a few years ago before they updated the pockets.  I liked that bag a lot.

Yes, I’ve been meaning to take some good pictures. Might even break out the ole Nikon.

I will try to weigh when I get the chance. Certainly not the lightest bag but it’s built to last. Haven’t owned a Hoofer so can’t compare but straps are great, never tangle.

I did not have issues with club tangle but I’m also not maniacal about it so YMMV.

i’m a fairly large guy at 63 240 and it’s actually really good to carry. I had purchased a Shapland Sunday bag and it was too small, I could not get the straps to work for me (that was 2-3 years ago). I have one strap on the last notch and the other on the next to last for what it’s worth.

Also, I’ll try to remember to take a picture, but the water bottle pocket is fantastic, can hold large water bottles easily. My Titleist Players was a PITA in that regard. You get get them in and out but it was a pain. This is a breeze.

So I finally got a chance to get some pictures taken with a decent camera. Hope this helps convey the quality of both materials and build. The pic of the water bottle (1000ml Camelback) inside its pocket were taken with approximately 18 balls in the ball pocket. As to weight, I came up with 6.0 or 6.2 (on a bathroom scale that only measures to nearest 0.2).
