Cool Rocco Mediate witb video

@azgreg I picked up on that as well, not sure if he misspoke or if he really wants a softer tipped 8 iron shaft, or after thinking about it some I wonder if he meant just what he said? Still unsure but there are many ways to approch wedge shafts for sure, and in Wedge's I would say most importantly the shaft that feels best to the player might be the best choice for lots of reasons and who knows a softer 8 iron shaft might just feel best to him so I cannot say but it did surprise me as well.

Yeah but I would think Ping could still give him the irons for free if they wanted to. But maybe I'm wrong and that would have to require some kind of contract.

For example, even though he may not have a formal sponsorship agreement, I doubt Mike Taylor is making him pay retail for every one of those dozens of wedges he has.

A small company like Artisan would be out of business if they gave 30+ wedges away, even at cost, to the pros.  Unless you have the luxury to do so (like a big OEM), there's no real reason to give your work away at a discount to anybody.

This video is great.  Not sure I ever heard a pro talking about wanting the ball to go left.  Also, the comment about a not being stiff enough goes right.  I realize this can vary swing to swing, but total opposite you would hear from people on hear.  Read so many times if it goes right it is too stiff and left too weak.  Really makes you rethink some stuff.  Would love to see more videos like this.  Tour player insight is incredible.

Exactly my experience as well. Soft goes high weak right.

Has anyone seen similar results going stiffer in driver shaft that actually helps them turn it over? And also seen a shaft that is too soft just fly high right??

@littletimbo182 Rocco's video reminds me of my old Teaching Pro, Old school if you will, but I found him to keep stating spin equals control and thats the key! Trouble is most Amateurs can't handle that much spin due to mechanics / technique because spin means it magnifies problems if they have any, so for that to be relevant you have to have great mechanics / technique to really see the bennefit of the kind of spin he is talking about, so good spin is deffinetly your friend.

Sorry to be so long winded, but hope that makes sense.

@RHenderson You summed it up quite nicely imho.  Back in the day, the fundamentals of the game seemed to be approached from a perspective of controlled/smooth repeatable fundamentals rather than the current goal of sheer power/distance.  Rocco's video was such a breath of fresh air because he eloquently expressed how it is possible for more mortal-like beings to be able to effectively play/swing rebar with positive results.  I believe Rocco used the word SPIN as the operative trait in getting the ball to move in a desirable way.  To control the spin of the ball you had to understand how the golf swing worked.  The older players knew this.  In days gone by golf manufacturers and instructors alike agreed.  Karsten Solheim, defense contractor/golf enthusiast/PING founder sold clubs to all who would purchase them with shafts that would rate between stiff/x-stiff today.  It's crazy to know that the science in flex/oscillation in the stiffer shaft profiles suited more golfers of all swing types 40+ years ago than does the marketing voodoo in the industry today.

I just read someone called Rocco a bum for his stance on spin and control of a 4i to average slightly above 200. This guy has won on tour(s) 20 times... he took Tiger to the absolute limit. Bunch of sillyness on this site. I'm done with WRX for today..

Just kidding! Actually honest truth I did. the satire didnt translate. I have seen so much weird stuff on this site lately it wouldn't surprise me. Everyone hits 4i 260 and driver 340 on wrx.

Whew!

Thanks for clarifying.

I guess my wife is right when she says I'm not nearly as smart and funny as I think I am!

By the way I'm in the same camp as you regarding all the faux pro's around this place and for the record don't even carry a four iron........

Pretty fuzzy math you have. He has 20 tour wins only if you double the actual wins he has had on the PGA Tour (6) and Champions Tour (4). 🤪

Not fuzzy math just misunderstood, 2nd swing video said 10 times on both the PGA and Champions tour which was word salad. You are right it 10 across both not in each.

This video from Rocco really makes you wonder about the true value of this high priced custom fitting craze. If Rocco walked in there he would have left with a set that was 3 flat and graphite sr. flex.

Having gone through several of these high priced fittings myself, they rarely nail it. An indoor fitting just is not the same as an outdoor fitting from grass tees. And all I need there is a fitter with a bunch of shafts and a wrench, when I see the ball flight I'm looking for, there's my set.

Completely agree. The proof is in the open air, and on the scorecard. I've been fitted for PX 6.5s twice. But they feel crappy to me. I get way better results from X7 and CT130, even if my speed doesn't quite 'justify' them. But who gives a good flaming eff?? It's your GAME that should justify your gear. Your score, the amount of fun you're having, and how good it feels to hittem. Life is short. No one knows your swing as well as you. Those guys in the bays are a bunch of primping, effete, virtual-range jockeys. Friggem. As you were.
