TM spider x putter differences between finishes?

Yeah all but the hydroblast chip if you look at them wrong.

Love my hydro blast butter. The feel is great the rule is amazing I really like the sightline system I find it just allows me to hit it on the proper line more often.

I have it with the slant neck like Rory McIlroy and I could see why he stuck with it over all the new releases. He added benefit is that there is no paint to chip.

I've always wanted to try the spider X putter but so many finishes to choose from.

hydroblast, copper, navy, etc.

I believe the inserts are the same, but is there any difference between the finishes?

Also, some says SX-32 on the sole while some says SX-92. Are those model numbers?

They use a cheap paint finish for the non-hydroblast x’s, and the paint will chip off rather easily on these (some may claim otherwise, but the paint chipping is 100% an issue - if you don’t use a head cover, nearly all the paint will be chipped away after one season). The hydroblast version fixes the paint finish issue, which makes it the better option no doubt - however they don’t offer the slant-neck model in hydroblast

So unless you want the slant neck, get the hydroblast

FWIW I have a navy spider I've been using for about 2 years now, and I have had no chipping issues at all.

Honestly, who doesn’t use a putter cover at this point? If you had a Scotty, Benttinardi, Odyssey, or any other new putter worth mentioning, it’s going to come with a head cover. If you don’t, they get beat up, dented, scratched, and generally look like crap after a season.

I’ve played a Spider Tour and Spider X for years and they both look new. The players complaining about paint issues must be brutal on those things. If you don’t use a cover while it’s in the bag or trunk, any putter will get scarred. Just not sure I understand the argument or how it can’t be applied to any other putter in existence.

If you putt with your putter and have it in a head cover otherwise, the paint “problems” become nonexistent.

I believe there are different inserts in some of the Spider Tours, but they should all be the same in the X, I think. The only differences in color are visual preference.

Of course all putter finishes will get beat up to an extent with no head cover, however the extent to which a spider x will get beat up is vastly worse than most other putters. And idk if you got lucky with more durable paint or what, but it definitely will still chip over time even with a headcover (to a lesser extent ofc). I mean, it’s a paint finish what else really needs to be said? Paint finishes are simply the least durable finish you can get. I have a friend who still uses an X (always uses a headcover) and it has numerous chips. Any other putter with a durable (non-paint) finish should look pretty much brand new if you use a headcover.

You say that yours still looks brand new after 2 years of use; if that’s indeed true (zero paint chips after 2 years of legit regular use) you’re an outlier. Chipping, specifically around the face, is inevitable over time. They stopped using the paint finish for this reason

And I use a headcover for all of my many putters besides my oldest one; my Odyssey white hot pro, which has been my main gamer for about 12 years (used throughout HS golf). Besides not using a hc, I’ve treated it about as well as one could (proper placement in bag to reduce cart dings, and just simply not doing anything stupid with it) - and about 12 years later it still looks VERY good, the black finish (non-paint) looks unchanged besides for a few tiny dings from not using a hc for over a decade. If the X got the same use/treatment over the same period of time, the putter would be naked of paint - which is honestly fine because 1. you can always get it refinished 2. The finish is obviously not gonna affect the performance (unless it’s preventing your ability to align). However I can understand the frustration for those who bought it at it the original msrp, a $350 putter shouldn’t have a paint finish.

And please don’t think that I’m bashing the X, i’m actually a big fan and will probably buy myself a new one before they’re completely discontinued. I just find it a bit strange when someone says they’ve been using an X for multiple years and have zero paints chips, because that’s basically impossible unless some people are legit getting more durable paints than others (which wouldn’t surprise me if it’s even possible). I’ve seen many people complain of chipping from simply taking the headcover on/off.

But It’s still an amazing putter, and who cares about some chips? I’d still game the Spider X over a GT/GTX (which have better finishes). Easily.

Yeah - I wasn’t really calling out anyone in particular and I don’t have any explanation for the durability, or lack thereof, on some of the X heads we’ve all seen posted. Just my personal experience. Maybe I got lucky. It’s been my primary gamer for two full seasons and I’ve had no problems at all, which probably led to some of the skepticism in my previous post(s) about it. If the horror stories and pictures I’ve seen posted are truly accurate, my X must be one in a million.

I gamed a Tour Black prior to the Chalk X, and the finish on it still looks great too. Have played a Hydroblast and Navy X as well, but not long enough to speak to the durability of either.

I have been gaming the navy Spider X since release and literally have no paint problems. Agreed with the posters above. If you treat the putter well with a headcover the chipping is non existent (for me). I would pick the color you like the most and just take care of it.

Yeah, dang, that looks great. Maybe certain color-ways have more durable paint than others. I feel like I see the bronze + white color-way (Aka Rory’s model before he switched to hydroblast) with most of the finish issues. Qc issues is somewhat common with big brands like TM, Callaway, etc, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the paint/finish quality did vary from putter to putter.

But yours looks surprisingly good, props on keeping it in such good shape. Idk if i’ve seen this color combo before, is it a stock color option?

I had a copper spider x. The headcover was always on it and I looked after it. Was chipping within weeks. Equally I have a friend with a copper x that looks fine over a year later who isn’t careful. We see both good and bad on the forum, which mean taylormades QC is poor for some to be fine and others to be terrible.

The spider X isn’t a bad putter and if you can get lucky with one with a decent paint job as some have, you’re laughing. But I’d be looking at hydroblast if I went back to a Taylormade putter as their putter paint issues go back a long way now to the ghost putters and spider blades.

I agree. If the paint chipping is a deal breaker for you go with the hydro blast finish.

But if you’re like me and want to look down at a black putter…. Sometimes it’s just the price you pay.

This putter has been in the bag for almost 2 years…
