Tried a Tri-Hot 5K Seven S Mallet

Recommended Posts

Had the opportunity to putt around with one of the new Tri-Hot 5K Seven S mallets today. From the first stroke I knew it was a solid match for me. I know the White Hot Face is sort of a hate it or love it kind of thing to many. But man it was just the perfect feel/sound for me. I spent 20 minutes trying the SC Phantom 5.5 and 7.5 first and I just couldn’t get comfortable with either.

Then the store manager (who I know well) offered to grab the new Tri-Hot mallet for me from the back (I believe he said they go on shelves on Friday) as he knows I currently game an Eleven 2-Ball. I’ve found the Eleven to be an amazing putter for lag putts and anything 6ft or further but for some reason tend to struggle with it from shorter distances. Not sure if it’s the big head size or weight of it, but it kind of just left me seeking a little bit more.

I know the conflict with these Tri-Hots is the price point, but if you haven’t put one in your hand yet and tried it… you have to. They are definitely steep in price but I feel like they offer so much more technology than a steel shaft block of stainless steel designed 40+ years ago.

Anyone else have the same issues with their Eleven 2-Ball or have the opportunity to try one of these new mallets too?

Just got fitted in to the Eleven Double Bend Tour Lined. Had no issues with any putts from any length, it just fit my eye and stroke extremely well. Coming from a L.A.B Mezz.1 which is supposed to be the most point and shoot, I am much more comfortable over any length putt with the Eleven than anything else I tried.

One thing i like to remind people regarding Odyssey, and more specially their stroke lab putters: if you’re playing a putter length <35”, you probably want to buy the weight-kit and try swapping out the interchangeable head weights with heavier ones. You have a 30gram counterweight in the end of the shaft, so if you’re playing less than 35” length then there’s a good chance the head, and swing weight in general, might feel too light

Odyssey doesn’t automatically adjust head weight by length, so the swing-weight for a 35” odyssey and a 33” odyssey will be significantly different

And even if you play 35”, it’s still possible that a 365gram head will feel a bit too light with the 30gram counter weight in the shaft

You could also when going shorter reduce the butt weight in the stroke lab shaft to get the desired swingweight you’re looking for

Agreed, i wish they would offer different weight options for the plug. However I don’t think they do, so that might be a more difficult process

Yes.  You would need to trim the weight to desired on a metal machine.   Or…remove the 30-40g weight completely and get a grip that is heavier than the stock grip to bring the swingweight where you like it.

Yep. And I’ve always wondered what most guys on Tour using a SL putter do to dial in their preferred swing weight - either adjust the head weight or adjust counterplug weight? Probably both i guess

If price is of concern, just need to wait a bit and within a year or so on Callaway Preowned they will hit ~200 as the others have.

I am talking after discount, which they just got done with one knocking off up to 40% off, with some patience it happens. These don't currently interest me, but I monitor their site quite often and you will see those kinds of deals. Sometimes they will be in the clearance section, and the clearance section gets 20% off here and there as well.

While I am waiting on my fitted Edel my ever generous neighbor loaned me a Callaway Stroke Lab Seven w/microhinge insert. I don't know how many generations ago this was but this putter rocks. It goes where I point it and what else do you need?

I wonder why the toe-hang has varied so much over the years for the Seven S. The (i think 2020?) Stroke Lab Black Seven S had only 25degrees of toe hang, and now they have 44degrees. Quite the difference.

Saw these at the PGASS yesterday, the head size is massive. I wouldn’t buy sight unseen.

I thought it was just me at first and then I grabbed the new Versa in the same model. Tri-hot is much larger

How massive we talking? Like in comparison phantom 7 or Toulon Vegas?

I haven't looked at a Phantom but like @Redbird mention above, prolly closer to Tank size. Bigger than the Vegas, I think the Versa and Vegas are comparable in size. Not saying anything is wrong with it, but I would def try to see one in person before buying/ordering.

This is true. The 5K 7 looks considerably larger than the OG/Versa/Toulon models. I like it and I’m thinking of getting one. It’s crazy stable I couldn’t believe how different it felt. MOI is off the charts. Always been a milled guy but been leaning inserts last season or so. 5K > Phantom 7.5 for me currently.

That is strange that Odyssey doesn’t have different head weights for different putter lengths though. I noticed that on their website. Wonder if they do something in the stroke lab shaft and/or grip with weighting.

I rolled the Tri Hot 7 CH yesterday at PGASS.  It initially was a very good fit for me.  It has lower toe hang for sure.  It is bigger than the WH OG 7 CH I gamed a bit last year.  The CH hides some of the size IMO, the slant neck and double bend really show “all that heel” at address.  The colors certainly help hide the size as well I think.

I was most pleased with the feel.  Having so much weight in the front takes some of the WH softness out, and I think brings it more in line with a very soft milled putter feel.  It felt much more responsive, and incredibly forgiving.  I tend to have mixed reactions to inserts, but initially I got the impression it plays / feels like a soft milled putter, with massive forgiveness.

They didn’t have my length in stock, but I might order one in 34” and see if it can knock my 5.5 out of the bag.  I left PGASS impressed by that putter.
