... I think I have mentioned this before but us old timers like to repeat stories. I was friends with the Head Greenskeeper of Prairie Landing, a really nice course in the Chicago suburbs. One of his absolute pet peeves was those that just moved off the cart path with their carts around the tees or greens. It seems subconsciously many will pull in into a worn area without even knowing they are doing it or leaving the cart path. Obviously not a considerate player but the average guy with a beer in their hand. Same for leaving the path and heading onto the fairway as it should be all over the place, reducing the wear. But folks tend to follow a worn path making things worse. He hated roping off tees and greens but said he had no choice because of those following the herd.

We have spent, and no joke, $300,000 on concrete cart paths.  When folks don’t want to walk on the concrete so they run that one wheel off.  We all know the rut, it’s crazy.  When it’s by the greens it’s infuriating.

It is a great feeling knowing your bag is all set and you can cool the Ho'ing for a bit.  😁 

I can't say enough good things about my replacing my 4 and 5 hybrids with my 7 and 11 woods over the last 6 weeks. Game changing stuff. I also now have had my larger putter grip on my Spider for 3 weeks and have gotten comfortable with it. 

 

Just like last week I am going to start this week playing a course that I haven't played since March. I am looking forward to my round tomorrow because of two things......

1. I like the stern test that Cummings Cove provides me. There are only a few courses that I play that feature such skinny fairways. Accurate tee shots are very important at Cummings Cove. 

2. The threesome of Florida Bill, Old Asheville man Clayton, and myself will certainly be a heck of a good time. Many laughs for sure!

... Play well amigo. I'd love to play the course again as they have made quite a few changes since I last played CC. I loved #10 where you played across the lake to a small landing area, then back across the lake to a green on a peninsula. But I see they turned it into a par 3. But at least you can still birdie #1 and #9 to book end the front.

I could tell. It was one of the first things I noticed when you started to share photos from your course. I said to myself, " they spent some big $ on concrete." The decorative traffic circles near tee boxes with the plants in the center ain't cheap bro. Your cart paths are resort course pure @Petethreeput, and I sure hear your frustration with members who don't appreciate enough the grounds crew's turf work.

I'm so grateful that I started the game of golf in late 1970's because that provided me with the experience of being a fan of the Golden Bear for a very long time. This weekend was very moving. Way to keep it going Jack ! ⚡

We just re-asphalted major problem areas, did not need to redo all of the paths. Doing them all in concrete…..dang, I’m actually surprised it’s not far more than $300K, in light of the quotes I’m getting to redo my driveway.

It’s been ongoing.  We have one more, each year one is selected.  The groundscrew does the removal of the asphalt and prep.  The concrete guy plays at the course so we get a good price. They come in a pour.

Cummings Cove only offers a net to hit into for a warm up, there is no driving range at the course. If I'm to have a decent shot at shooting a solid number today I need more than a few range rocks off of a mat into a net, so I'm starting out with a quality range session at Broadmoor before I head to the course.

Luck.

 

Luck is knocking in a 100' multiple breaker up the hill for a birdie from the fringe.

Luck is the ball rolling back into the bunker, hitting the rake handle and burrowing.  Oy vey.

Luck is the lay up to perfect position being in a divot and having to clear water, only to not clear the water...

Luck is the second bunker shot ending up in an old rake furrough so you have to hit way behind the ball to get under all back channel to "splash" the ball.

 

I went birdie, birdie, then I was in the trees.  About 20 yards in front of me is a 2' window and I am going to hit a low punch cut through the window that's going to run right up to the pin for my third birdie.  Newsflash... I didn't happen.  Another double as the ball ricocheted all the way across the fairway into another tree.  Followed up that double with another birdie.  So much for having total control of my golf ball.

Good afternoon, golfers!  Due to heavy rain over the weekend, our course was walkers only this morning.  The following picture is the lie for my second shot on the par 4 16th hole.  And.....I was only 5 yards off the fairway.  I was approximately 140 yards from the pin, but no possible way for me to do anything but try to punch it back in the fairway.  It was very lucky that I even found the ball, because it was only visible looking from directly above it.

 I have two friends already down at Pinehurst.

 

First, Chef is with JT this week and he sent me a text while I was playing that said,

"Pinehurst Village is the prettiest place I've ever seen in the country LP."  I was sort of shocked that Parker said that because he has been almost everywhere in the USA.

That was a big compliment.

 

Second, because over the past few years Jordon my buddy and BFCC Asst. Superintendent has worked both at the Masters and also at East Lake CC in Atlanta during the Tour Championship he was invited to help with the course this week. He shared with me these photos from today.

Work was slow later in the afternoon so ... played a quick 9 over at Aliante. Been a while since I've actually played it and gotta say ... it's in pretty stellar condition. Was totally empty so played two off every tee to play in; then futzed around each green working on short pitches and chips and such. Still need to dial in some better distance control but feeling good about the direction we're headed. 

 

Bonus - barely any freakin wind! 😂

 

Need to start doing that more instead of just banging away on some range. Think I might do it again tomorrow!

No golf today, as I need to take my wife's car in for a service.  We have a nice stretch of weather forecasted for the rest of the week.  I have started writing my final review on the Toura Golf CB irons that I built and have been field testing for the past several weeks.

I've chatted with all my bookies in Vegas and my picks for the US Open, temporary as they might be, are in. Personally, I have the feeling that the winner will come not from the Blue Chips, but from the middle of the pack this year. And with the very challenging greens, fast and undulating, it'll be the guy who putts the best this week.

I finally did it, and I am not happy.  I truly believe no one chooses to live out of their vehicle, it is the culmination of either mistakes (FTX), bad luck (illness), or mental health/self medication and drugs for which no one should be punished.

 

The outside socket has been available to the folks who knew about it after hours to charge their devices because in my eyes its the only way for them to connect to the "other side" and have a chance to get out of their circumstances.  It's been this way since the homeless population began to swell in 2021.  Well, the last week or so someone has decided to put a foot up on the building while scrolling, creating smudges and a general look of malaise.  Then someone decided the siding was a quality spot to put out a cigarette.

 

Zip tied it is.  It's always the few who take the things from other respectful folks because of poor behavior.

Pinehurst Update for Tuesday.

 

Jordon sent me this great photo of him rolling the greens this morning. They are getting the green speeds over 14 on the Stimp.  YIKES ! 

 

Chef is going inside the ropes for JT's practice round this afternoon and told me he would share with me some photos from his walk around the course.

Sort of.  😅  I know she wants to.  It's on the outside of my building (not house that is too far out of the way) and I thought I was doing everyone a solid, and for 3 years they thought so too and treated the building with respect.  Apparently we have a new person who doesn't respect the property so now all those who relied on it are out of luck.  It bums me out.

14 is crazytown at that place!  I can't think of a flat spot on any of them.  Apparently Kaymer's evisceration of the course years ago stung a little too much.

 

I think I mentioned one of my buddies on our trip there last November hit a 40 yard chip shot directly at the flag, it hit, bounced right, and then rolled off the green about 20'.  "Welcome to Pinehurst."  I would be they were running 10.5, or that is what the caddie suggested.

The greens are the only defense, but 14 is crazy fast and I don’t care how good of a putter you are, you’re going to miss some putts that just run away and potentially end up in a worse spot.

I just got off the phone with the Tour Chef. He said during his walking around today he saw no fewer than 14-16 players accidentally putt off the green. Like many of you have said the green speeds will be brutal for the players, but I think it also will be entertaining for the fans to watch. Chef also commented on there being no rough, but if your tee shot goes off the fairway by as little as three inches you are in the wild plant growth junk.

It's almost time for Day Two of golf for me this week. Well it finally is happening!  I have been trying to get the two Bill golf buddies of mine together in the same foursome for 6 weeks. At 3 PM today at CC of A it will go down. 🙂 This will be Bill from Naples, FL first time playing the course. I played well yesterday so I am hoping my steady play continues this afternoon. Our spectacular weather has stuck around and that makes me happy.
