what’s amazing is that ozzie would be a late game defensive replacement or, at best, a utility guy in today’s mlb

 

but he played in a different era and is a 15 time all-star and hall of famer.

There are a lot of players from that time probably wouldn’t have had the careers they did nowadays.  I wonder if Maddox or Tony Gwynn would be in that category.

i truly believe great pitching is transferrable across every era. 

 

maddux was in his prime during the steroid era, so i think he’d do just fine in today’s MLB.

 

the only thing that would mess him up would be if he was pitching when robot umps go into effect. 

 

gwynn is an interesting one though. having a guy take up an outfield lineup spot who really has no pop is a big ask - but i don’t think you can keep him out of the lineup when he’s hitting .330+ every year.

Wow! I just looked up his career statistics. His first year he hit .289 and for the next 19 years he never batted below .300, even in his final two seasons when almost all aging players tail off. Played his whole career with San Diego.

In 2001 the Mariners had a scrawny kid who played outfield and had no pop in his bat.  That team won 116 games.

exceptions and outliers are just that - exceptions and outliers. 

 

neither ichiro nor gwynn are prototypical corner outfielders in today’s game. 

 

that doesn’t mean they’re not incredible talents and hall of famers. 

 

plus, ichiro was already a proven commodity when he came over to the states.

I agree a great pitcher that gets people out would be just fine.  I was thinking more along the lines of he doesn't throw mid to upper 90's, he may have never really gotten an opportunity.  Then again with Questec, that may have also served as a detriment, because with the umpires being graded off that system may have tightened his zone. 

 

As for Tony Gwynn, I actually think he would be more suited in the game today.  I think the rule changes are going to see more guys like him be valuable.

 

This is sort of what makes baseball great, you can really have great debates.

there are quite a few starters who are getting guys out with low-90s fastballs and great off speed stuff. 

 

agreed that maddux isn’t the body type that scouts are looking for nowadays but getting outs is what matters, along with not walking batters.

We have a stringbean starter who has already pitched 4 games this year.  Control pitcher... 1 base on balls so far this season.  17 strikeouts.

... I have given up on baseball for now. Followed the White Sox my entire time in Chicago but not being able to follow them day to day and the fact that they seem to be inept on offense and defense while the "stars" are injury prone has cured me of being a fan. One of these days I will start watching the Diamondbacks but all this talk of CB and Angel are giving me nightmares where Joe West tosses out a batboy and beer vendor for just looking at him without kissing his ring.
