Outdoor setup

Work it backwards,  Generically for a decent Radar based system you need a minimum of 8ft Ball to net.  12ft or greater is best.

Then add on a 5'x4' hitting mat,  if the ball is in the middle of the 4ft mat, and the ball to net is 8ft your pad should be minimum 10ft total length.

For a camera system, if using a driver without actually hitting the net/screen 6ft radius (average height person).  so your pad can be as small as 8ft.

Width of pad depends on how you want your mat to sit,  offset of net or centered on net.  If you want offset it can be as narrow as 5ft.  if you want it center 8ft width is minimum.

I have a net and mat that are not permanent. I did the PlayBetter trial for Skytrak (30 days), Garmin R10 and Swing Caddie SC300i (both 60 days).

For the radar units (Garmin and SC), the more ball flight they can measure, the better the results. Most state a minimum of 8’. The challenge is your net height, especially when it comes to short irons or wedges. My net is pretty cheap, sold as 10’ x 7’, but it’s really not 7’ high - probably closer to 6-1/2’ in the middle where it sags a little. I have to move my mat so close to the net for short irons and wedges that the radar units won’t work. Skytrak is fine because it’s using cameras aimed at the ball on the mat - no ball flight reading is needed.

For my setup, Skytrak was by far the best option. Lots of people say it won’t work in direct sunlight, but I had it in full sun during the Texas summer and it performed flawlessly. It was the 1st unit I tried, so I returned it hoping the less expensive options would work equally as well, but they didn’t, at least not for short game practice.

One recommendation: make sure you have plenty of padding under your mat. My mat is also on concrete. It takes a toll on wrists and shoulders.

Good luck!

Makes sense, I'm just trying to get it all figured out before I build it

I have an outdoor set up. DIY net station roughly 10' from my ball position with my Mevo Plus 8' feet back from that. 10' x 9'. I'm right-handed and didn't want the station to take up so much space so I have different depths on side walls. 5' on my left and 8' on right with a ceiling.

I extended the right side last year. This is how it looked before. I take it down for winter.

I keep the frame up...just take down the nets. But even then, it would be fast assembly.

With the roof, flop shots and sky balls are all covered. I have solar panels over my station... so taking no chances.

Speaking of the nets: I buy #18 1" barrier nets which are strong and semi rigid ( https://www.ebay.com/itm/224956952729 ). They can hold a lot of snow/ice on the roof which right now is 10 x 8. Gives me peace of mind more than anything to take them down in the winter.

I also have an outdoor setup but I am having a hard time aligning the radar on a brand new Mevo+. There is a vertical white line with a ball attached and a vertical yellow line. How do I use these lines? There seems to be no literature on the setup. Thanks everyone.

Gst a small right angle ruler. Follow the instructions on the mevo+ quick ref guide they include with the device. Put up an alignment target in front of your net. Align the 90* ruler to your target and then setup the mevo+ to the ruler.

Works like a charm and takes about 3 minutes every time. I ignore what mevo+ is showing in the target alignment screen. I don't think their line is accurate. I get good reads...confirmed by ballflight on course matching what mevo+ says.
