Oil can DIY question

Newbie refinished question here. Is the color of your oil can finish determined by the heat and color change of the head, or the color of the oil you dunk it in or both?

 

I am looking for that darker grey brown tones like what you see below. I will be blasting the putter in question before heating but. Was unsure of how the even brownish gray was achieved. I know plum brown is an option but was looking to do this without it.

Heat and also the oil used at least to who I have talked to. My Cody James is a Motor Oil finish and I asked him why is it black vs like a brown like BOS or others, he said his blend is different and everyone is different for their blends and preference and something you have to play around with.

The type of oil makes no difference it's in the prep and torch time.  The oil is just for protection when it soaks in a hot putter.

Sooooo are oil can finishes just Torched....then dipped in oil....never thought about it until this thread.

A true oil can finish like the old Cameron series were done by BOS, It is more of a chemical and heat process.  You can DIY something similar with just heat and oil but will not have the same rainbow effect.

Interesting, thank you all for the insights. I have found a company online that I suspect provides some solutions that BOS and other companies use. May try some of their stuff on a some test metals from my job.
