Myrtle in Aug - 2 rounds

Recommended Posts

Green fees in Myrtle Beach are low in summer because golf demand is low due to the heat. You should be able to play any two courses you want for well under $500.  If you are staying at the south end if the Grand Strand, play Caledonia and True Blue. If staying in the center, play the Dunes Golf Club and Grande Dunes. If you are staying in north MB, play Barefoot Love and Glen Dornoch ( or Tidewater). If you are staying in North Carolina play Rivers Edge and Bald Head Island.

I just finished playing 5 days in Myrtle last week. I would rank my favorite to least favorite top to bottom:

1. TPC Myrtle Beach (best shape of the 5. Greens really held the balls. Fun, challenging holes)

2. Dunes golf and beach club (great challenging course. My toughest round but really enjoyed it)

3. Caledonia (Beautiful, majestic course. Drive in feels like an old plantation. Which they wouldn’t have started us on 10 because we finished on an 87 yard par 3 on hole 9. Just felt like a let down as a concluding hole. Still, gorgeous course)

4. Legends Heathland. This was the first play of the week. Very nice course. Very open. Driver-friendly. Great course to start the week.

5. Oyster Bay (Sunset Beach NC just across the border). Love the layout. Course condition was not what I expected. A few of the greens were a bit rough and lots of bare dirt at edge of fairways. Cart paths were very deteriorated and actually completely gone in some places. A worthwhile play but also a disappointment after playing it a number of years ago when it was pristine.

There are so many good courses down in the Grand Strand it’s hard to go wrong!

If you are looking at MB course rates for today, they are peak now.
You can play 2 of the top courses in the summer, that Sabram gave you for
about half your budget.

If going the last week of August, some courses might not be available, due to
the World AM.

Summer is green aeration season, so ask about that.

Happy to have you join me as an accompanied guest at The Dunes Club if I'm in town. Shouldn't be more than $70 that time of year.  PM me the dates you're looking to play. I typically play early (like 740-800) and fast, so you may be done before your family knows you've been gone!

Hope he takes you up on that offer. Beautiful course and one of my 2 favorites last week when I was down there! Also watched a 'kid' get all ruffled when the starter told him to turn his hat around. "We do have a dress code here, you know..." Guy was polite about it, but firm. I appreciated it. It's clearly stated on the website. No excuse to not know. Very classy people and facility!

Generous of you to offer the opportunity!

Pine Lakes was a challenging but fun course when I was there recently.

I played Grande Dunes as well, it was nice and had accommodating fairways but I enjoyed the challenge of Pine Lakes more.

Can’t wait to go back this summer! Dunes Club and Litchfield Country Club are at the top of my list to play.

I'm down as well during that time frame. - - so if it works out - i'd like to join you.

I love that golf course.

Question to those of you who have played either Dunes or great dunes, how are the conditions? Are the fairways and areas around the green very firm and moan very tight?

I play irons and wedges that have a little bit wider sole and a little bit higher bounce so these might not be the best choice to bring with me for the trip.

Unless it has changed drastically, nothing in MB is super tight to the point you would need to worry about that. They don't have the soil makeup to be like that in summer and survive the heat.

Thanks. I asked because when I played Streamsong in Florida I had my old glide wedges and that wasn't really ideal on the really tight lies and firm bottomed bunkers.

I don't play MB in the summer, but generally MB courses don't have
many tight runoff areas on the sides or back of greens.

I head that The Dunes is adding more runoff areas around greens, in prep
for the PGA Tour next Spring.   The Dunes always has good bunkers.

Grande Dunes has new bunkers, so sand could be soft.

I know up here in the north east we've gotten tons of rain this summer so the course has been pretty soft. Last year it was rock hard around August due to lack of rain. Has the MB area being getting the same rain we have? I'd expect it to play a touch softer if so... And I won't need to get different wedges, haha

Caledonia, True Blue, Barefoot Dye Course, Grand Dunes are all solid options that would fit your budget.

100% this.  I would add TPC Myrtle Beach as that was an excellent course when I played it ages ago.

I've been doing some research on playing the dunes club and would love to hear from a member.

Ill be down last week of March looking to play. Do you know if the course will have restrictions due to the PGA event? The geeensfee is over 300 on the packagers website so I would hope not too many.

second question is do you think playing it at that price is worth it?

thanks!

I am not a member of The Dunes, but play it most years.

Peak rates start in Mid March.  Even before Covid + The Tour
arrived, The Dunes was $220-260 in peak season.
So now $300 isn't too bad.   Keep in mind that Dynamic Rates have pushed
The Dunes up to $500 in recent years, so if you decide to play there, book it as
soon as possible.

I figure that it might be CPO, but don't know.
