Unfortunately, this article has some errors.  Looks like Rory is keeping the PW. He does not use a TM P790 PW.

I wonder if this is course specific or a potential shift in his overall setup. For how elite Rory is with the long game and how spotty he is in the wedges I always wondered why he leaves big gaps in his weakest area and fills up the strongest area with extra tools. Kind of a min/max question, do you lean into your strengths in hopes you can make up for your weaknesses or lean into the weaknesses in attempt to balance them out. We'll find out I guess!

he has used 4 wedges in the past, he did it during his two major wins when he was with NIKE

Good call, I wish the stats supported anything significant here though. It looks like he went from 4 wedges in 2015 to 3 in 2016 and promptly dropped off a cliff in terms of 125-150y stats, but then shot straight back to the top in 2017 with the same setup. Rory gonna Rory I guess. 😆

There are issues for him for him with how far he hits it

 

3 wood is going 285+ off the deck 

5 wood is going 260+ off the deck

3 iron is going 235 to 250 (stock)

4 iron is going 215 to 230 (stock)

...

PW is going 145 to 160

50 is going 130 to 140

54 is going 110 to 125

60 is the rest

so lets say he drops the 50, there are probably times where he has 138 and wants it come in high, well a small PW isn't going to produce that

so he adds then a 50 and takes out the 3 iron, so probably a situation where he has 240 and a touch of wind, and 4 iron won't get there but 5 wood is going to balloon into the wind, wishing he had the 3 iron

 

This is just my guess

 

probably a 7 wood might fix his gaping issues at the top but he probably wants something to come in low as well, so maybe won't fix his problem

I can’t think of another player recently that hits such dominant drives and fails to capitalize on them… Whatever wedges he has is inconsequential IMO. Because it’s definitely him, not the clubs.

He's super in his head. Whatever psychologists he's been working with are clearly not competent enough to identify and root out the source of self-doubt.

He needs to drop the PGA Tour Policy Director thing. He's worn out. Golf doesn't look fun for him anymore.

His wedge game needs serious work. I am about as big of a Rory homer as there is. I want him to win but watching him make bogeys from the center of the fairway with wedge in hand is just brutal...

Not sure if anyone caught it on the telecast, but when Rory was walking off 18 and he shook Jack's hand you could hear Jack tell him that they needed to find a time to sit down and talk.  This wasn't long after during the telecast Jack said he felt Rory might need to dial it back some to regain control.

I don't how much control he can regain, sounds like he is doing really good

I'm assuming Jack was referring to non-tee shots.  I don't know.  Those are good stats so I would assume Jack wasn't referring to the driver.

At the memorial Rory was leading in strokes gained off the tee, 4th in strokes gained around the green, but 49th in approach shots. So probably Jack was talking about dialing it back on how hard he hits approach shots.

 

He was also 35th in putting, so not great there either, but approaches was the killer.
