Driver off the deck - why so straight?

Recommended Posts

I’ve been messing around with hitting driver off the deck just for fun and have found it goes SO much straighter than off a tee! Like legitimately I never hit it out of play off the deck. Just a low launch, low spin bullet down the fairway. Why could this be? I’m not planning on being a DOD guy all the time but am wondering what I can incorporate from that delivery into my regular swing. I’m assuming it’s partially due to the angle of attack likely being much more neutral/squeeze rather than 5-6 up but that’s just a guess. Curious everyone’s thoughts!

Don’t really have an answer for you but going to follow this thread as I’ve noticed the same…..and I do you use it on the course.  Especially into the wind second shots on par 5’s.

I’ll give up my wrx card and admit I don’t have mid iron seconds into those par 5’s. 😏

If you're 5* or 6* up that's exactly why. You know the average driver AoA on the PGA Tour is -1.2*? The minus sign is intentional there.

Just tee it lower, try to hit down on it a bit and see if that helps off a tee, sounds like it might!

Exactly.  The hit up 5 narrative is a mess because the overwhelming majority of golfers can’t line up the face, path, sweet spot and target hitting up that much, for what turns out to be a fairly modest gain.  Not to mention many golfers have to slow down to hit it in the same zip code.

All "tips" are welcome. Instruction not desired.

Great insight boys. I had no clue that the AoA on PGA Tour was that low. I thought optimal was 4-5 up so I purposely do that. I think maybe I saw that on a Ping chart or something? I’ll definitely try neutralizing that a bit and see what happens.

It may be optimal for carry distance for your CHS, but there's often unintended consequences when you try to manufacture that AoA.

Interesting maybe that's why I hit it so much better whenever I have it teed up a little lower. At the very least I can control where the ball goes better.

Teeing the ball lower, or in this case not at all, pretty much makes it impossible to right tilt early and forces you to rotate your shoulders more perpendicular to your spine which makes it easier to have a neutral path and face.

Its optimal for distance only. For accuracy...not so much. If you have the speed that the tour guys have, you dont need to go for max  distance all the time. If youve got wide fairways or an open course where you can hit the ball 2 fairways over and still make par, you can go hulk smash all the time. Tighter courses or heavy rough, you might want to tone it down a bit.

Early in hand photos of the new GT2 models t the truck.  As soon as they show up on the range in player's bags we'll get some better from the top photos and hopefully some comparison photos against the last model.
