Who uses a Pencil bag regularly?

Recommended Posts

I tried hard but it was always more annoying than it was worth. There's just not enough space for the clubs and none of them really carry right unless you really are just using 6-7 clubs.

I ended up going with the Ping Hoofer Craz-E Lite and it is just as light as the Moonlite was but it actually makes sense as a golf bag and carries 14 clubs

I’ve been interested in one and have been doing extensive research. At this point I’m leaning towards something like the Sun Mountain 2.5 or Titleist carbon. They come in as light or lighter than a lot of the pencil bags and has a stand and dual shoulder straps. Even though they’re meant to hold a full set there’s no reason you can’t just carry as little as you want and you get more pocket organization options.

With the ultralight stand bags on the market now I just can’t make any of the pencil/Sunday bags make sense. The stand and dual straps would be a huge advantage for my poor back.

I'm in the same boat. I think a little pencil bag with 6-7 clubs would be fun to keep on hand for par 3 courses. But I have the Callaway HyperLite bag, which I don't think is even near the lightest bag on the market, and I couldn't imagine needing anything lighter.

I would say I use my Ping Moonlite 25% of my rounds. Usually I use a normal carry bag, or a push cart. But I do like to take out the Sunday bag on certain occasions. Usually when I know I don't need a sweater, rain gear, anything like that. I like to keep it super light and just go. But yeah, I use this one pretty regularly. It even fits into a power cart if need be pretty good.

Full set or partial when you use yours?

I use a Moonlite pretty regularly. I'd say around 40-50% of my rounds. I actually use it quite a lot for league (full set), and I have a little three hole loop in my subdivision where I live. So I'll throw a half set in and walk from my garage down to the loop. It's a really versatile bag, with more room than you think. It's also quite good for travel if you're driving somewhere and need the trunk space. You can fit a full set, half a dozen balls, water bottle, range finder, and whatever else you might need, and it takes up half the space of my other bag (CrazE lite).

Cannot recommend Moonlites enough. I've used them since I was a junior, and will continue for the foreseeable future.

I use a Jones Players Series carry bag about 75% of the time.  I generally don't carry 14 clubs, more in the neighborhood of 11 or so.  It works great for me.  If it's super wet or muddy, I'll move over to my Jones Utility stand bag just so the bag stays dry.

I load in the full set. I could probably do without the 60 degree or hybrid, but I get all 14 in there no problem.

I use one of these from Seamus.  Would not recommend it to anyone for actual golf use.  The pockets are the worst design in the business.  What goes in will fall out.

What do you use this bag for then?

This makes the most sense to me as well, but I still find myself looking at pencil bags for the old school simplicity.

Also, note that the Titleist Carbon is not nearly as light as it claims to be.  2.5+ is a much better and lighter bag of those 2 choices.

What bag are you currently using? You seem to cycle through them regularly like myself.

I do here and there but there are issues that just don't fit my main use case all that well and i end up defaulting back to my trusty Hoofer Lite after a few rounds.

1)  I mostly play in the early morning and the dew or leftover rain from the night transfers to my side and back.  Even though the sunday bags are mostly waterproof on the bottom, the water/dirt will still then transfer when it comes in contact with me.

2) I drink a lot of water on the course during this time of year and need storage for multiple bottles.  There are no refill stations at any of the courses I've played here in Canada.

3) My Hoofer Lite's padding where it rests against my back is so much more comfortable than the structureless moonlite where often times, I'l come in contact with the club's shafts instead.  Even with the TM Quiver bag, the Hoofer Lite just balances better and I can carry 14 more comfortably in the HL than 7-10 in the Quiver.

I love the idea and aesthetic of a light sunday bag for a short set.  And I hold out hope that there will one day be a sunday bag that fits my needs.  But the reality is on the course with the bags I've tried, it often makes me wonder why I don't have my Hoofer Lite with me instead.

I've been using a Hoofer Lite for awhile now.  Tried a bunch before realizing the Hoofer Lite is nearly perfect for me.

I love these images ... They always make me start Googling Sunday bags. I love the thought of the basics of golf - a sleeve of balls, handful of tees, water bottle and clubs. Throw 'em in a sack and go.

And then, right before I checkout with my new bag ... I remember my 50-year old back, my surgically repaired knee and all the pain involved in moving said bag. I slowly close out of the page and resume what I was doing.

I actually went as far as buying a Sunday Golf Loma bag for the reasons you said.  Playing alone with five or six clubs, sometimes less than even nine holes, is an awesome experience for me.  Unfortunately my 63 y/o body (and the Midwest weather) won’t allow it as often as I like.
