Ben Crane Repairing Ball Marks

Never seen an instructional like this - am familiar with all the push inward advice but depending on the size of my mark and type of greens I’m playing on, often am unsatisfied with the result. Thoughts?

Summary: he says he was taught by those at Augusta to make a hole in the middle of the mark and expand it, then press the sides in.

Looks like he early extended a little when he bent down to make the first hole.

Yes, and not moving to flexion in his wrist properly. Is he using a tour issued repair tool?

This is how you repair particularly bad ball marks, with the "dirt" in the middle. Core out the dirt, push the grass back over to fill it in.

 

If you "pop" up a ball mark, it'll take weeks to grass over and heal again.

I always push towards the middle but when it’s bad like that, feels like I’m tearing roots to get the mark totally repaired. Will try this.

This is new to me. I like it. Too bad I’m usually chipping onto the green with my godawful 11% GIR. But I‘ll tell my more able golfer friends!

Agreed.

 

I aspire to having to worry about repairing my ball marks (although occasionally I do try to repair one or two made by others). My access route to all greens is a roller onto the fringe, the "flying under the radar" approach. 🙂

Ha, in the world of old man golf, most ball marks resemble skid marks made by a 3 wood from 110 yards out. 😉

After reading this post and watching the video, I decided to try this technique today. It took me a little longer to repair each pitch mark but once completed, each repair looked good. When I play tomorrow I will check out the surfaces at each spot. Stay tuned. 😉

I’ve always used similar to this.  Seemed intuitive. I work with metal.  It’s like fixing a dent.  It has a memory.  And pushing the outside inward is what you what. But sometimes you have to either shrink the center with heat , ( which is stretched ) or even drill a couple relief holes and then weld them back up after it’s smoothed.  This seems same to me.  When I see a guy use a tool and stab and twist. I want to scream.  I have no earthly idea why anyone would do that.

Agree. Something about pushing out the center to “match” the displaced grass allows the grass to come back together better than if I’d just push the grass back together on its own. 
 

coring out the center seems to make space to bring the elevated sides of the mark back together.

Good news. Those pitch marks healed so well, that when inspecting the general area of the putting surfaces, I found no evidence of damage to the greens. If you take your time with a little effort, this method appears to work very well. ⛳️

I have played two rounds using this technique and for me it works really well.  I am a believer LOL!
