do you use a swing trigger ?

Recommended Posts

Jack Nicklaus rotated his head to the right (he believed this helped him make a proper backswing turn).

Sam Snead kicked his right knee in a bit (he believed this helped his swing rhythm and tempo).

Colin Montgomery moved his hips laterally a little bit (he believed this helped his swing rhythm and tempo).

The above are swing triggers which players use prior to their swing takeaway. Today I tried Snead's method of kicking in the right knee and I liked the results, as it seemed to smooth out my takeaway.

If you have a trigger please reply to this thread.

I do, Stenson trail knee / leg pressing into the ground. I have to be careful with it because it can cause the ripple effect; trail hip maxing out early -> hands moving too much in -> late arm raise -> incorrect sequence

You like Stenson's method because it helps achieve a true weight shift ?

No, I just try not to freeze over the ball. My goal is to start the takeaway as soon as the club is in place, addressing the ball.

With due respect to the all the great players who like "trigger" motions, I believe it's an unnecessary complication. One more thing you have to do consistently. I struggle enough with the basics of the swing, can't afford to add additional little quirky moves into it.

I feel the same way about forward pressing to initiate the putting motion. That's just asking for trouble for no reason IMO. One more thing you can screw up.

I regrip the club with my left hand (I'm a righty).  I almost completely let go of the club - it's just resting in my fingers - then I regrip it and go.  It helps keep me from having too much tension in my arms - if I hold the grip for too long my forearm muscles get all tense.

You don't have to have one.  It just depends on the kind of golfer you are - even pros can freeze over the ball or need dozens of waggles before they're ready to go.  It's like anything else in golf: it CAN help, but it doesn't help every single person.

I actually have found that a trigger has been more beneficial for my putting than my full swing - but that is just because I tend to get really handsy and my backstroke gets way off path.

Certainly most Tour players do not utilize a swing trigger, likely for the reason you suggest, that it is an "unnecessary complication".

On the other hand, rhythm and tempo are very important factors of good effective golf swings. I believe anything a player can do to improve his/her tempo and rhythm is worthwhile.

Tempo is pace and rhythm is sequence. My swing rhythm has been off the past few weeks so I searched for a swing trigger to help my rhythm and found one that was helpful. I have no idea if the trigger will continue to help but for the past couple of rounds it's been good.

II think most every Tour player has some sort of pre swing waggle, foot tapping,  or other method to relieve tension. An actual trigger to start the swing, however, is much less common.

Three huge waggles like Duffner then I start.  Purpose is to release tension from my shoulders and hands.

I use tour tempo almost anytime I hit balls. When I play, I tend to repeat the tones in my head. So my trigger is the tempo tones in my head. My whole tempo/ rhythm is my trigger.

I do the same - SWING - SET - THRU (21/7). This reduces the chance that I get quick and pull left.
