Did the Wilson Buttonback ever win on tour?

Recommended Posts

I could probably look into this and or course I will but I thought it might be fun just to throw the question out there and see what pops up.

Did the 1971 era Wilson Staff Dynapower ie; "Buttonback" irons have any use or even wins on the tour?  Who played them with success?  As what is probably my all-time favorite vintage/classic iron I'm interested in it's tour lineage, if indeed there is any.

Any takers?  Did my beloved Buttonbacks earn any trophies?

Good question. I wonder that a lot about many of the older clubs I collect.  I know for example Palmer won with the ‘61 Dynapowereds.
But that’s an obvious one.  I have researched individuals who played Spalding and the checked pics on Gettyimages.  71 is out of my time period of interest but I would recommend figuring out who was on the Wilson Staff then doing a search on Getty.

It's a little more difficult in that Era ... Guys played irons longer and were slower to switch. Somebody could have been winning with these well into the mid to late 70s

Jeff Sluman won the PGA Championship with a set of Buttonbacks in a Maxfli bag if memory serves.

This is a great point.   I’ve found pictures of Billy Casper with the ‘61 Dynapowereds in ‘66 and as late as ‘69.

Well I'm not much of an internet sleuth I guess as I didn't find anything at all.  I dug through all the Getty pictures I could handle and the only one I found was the same one posted by holabachgt - again an excellent find.  Of note is that the picture is dated to his 1988 PGA Championship win which means it was highly likely that his irons were the late 80's re-issues.  I couldn't tell what the shafts were but I know they were released with TT Dynamic Golds as well as the Wilson Firesticks at least.

While sifting through the Sluman pictures I noticed he played a slew of Classic Wrx classics such as BeCu Pings, a variety of Mizuno blades, and this:  a Wood Bros "Texan" dated 1992.  I'd say Mr. Sluman had excellent taste in equipment!
