26* iron, hybrid, wood distances

Someone more knowledgeable than I will probably come along soon, but I believe rule of thumb is:

Longer shaft = fast clubhead speed simply due to faster rotation the further from the center of rotation that the clubhead is.

I also feel like woods/hybrids go a bit further than irons, even with the same length/loft. Not sure if it's a hotter face or bigger head or what.

There's a number of factors at play here as someone mentioned length, club head, etc.

For reference i hit my 4 iron (21º) about 200-205 yards, but i hit my new 4 hybrid (20º) about 230 yards..

Important to try stuff out to judge gapping, same (or very similar loft) can still equate to big gaps.

All 26' that's a mind boggle...  🙂  I've never seen those clubs equal, much less, same length =

Maybe I was not clear. I’m referring to standard length clubs. My bag does not have three 26* clubs. Just asking a question, nothing more.

Generally the same lofted hybrid will travel further due to the longer shaft, same for the equivalent lofted wood. That’s with all things given, that’s why a lot of times players will go up in loft, such as a 22* hybrid in place of a 3 iron if the next club after it is a standard 4 iron. This is a general guide line. One really need time  on monitor or in real time range or course time to see one’s carry numbers and what the player is really after.

There also comes a point of diminishing returns. Theoretically it’s possible to have way way too much spin from a 26* wood with a long shaft, such that it MAY travel shorter than a 26* hybrid.

Generally I’d say you’re right, but many things are possible in practice.

How about an iron, a hybrid and a wood all with the same loft and same length.. How would the distances differ ??

I would imagine you'd see the iron travel the shortest and the wood travel the longest. By how much, depends on the person and the club. Could be less than a few yards.

And that depends on launch angle and peak height, IME the wood goes further, the hybrid second and the iron shortest.  It depends a lot on swing speed.

Did an experiment with five iron and hybrid the same length, the hybrid was15 yards longer, flew higher and was easier to hit, can't find a fairway to test

It all has to do with club head design and where the CG is placed.

I am assuming its referring to carry yardages.

Just like with drivers you place the CG lower and deeper you will lower spin and increase launch and same can be said why hybrids go further than irons and why fairway woods go further than hybrids.

The length of them has something to do with it too but honestly if the same lofted fairway wood was shorter than the iron it would still go further and probably the hybrid as well.

I use a 27 degree hybrid set at 26 degree. It goes as far as my 23 degree 6 iron as far as carry, but with much more height.

In theory they’d be similar but get there different ways based on launch and spin with the iron being the lowest/lowest and the wood being the highest launch and spin and the hybrid in between. That’s just physics based on the CG weight

I am not a fast swinger at all, usually hit my 7i 140 ish carry wise to give you a reference but here is my setup:

G430 6i which was 25.5* and a hair under 38" playing length

Tour Edge Exotics Xrail 5h which is 26* and 39 3/8" playing length

G430 SFT 7w which is 22* and I lofted it to 23* flat setting and it plays at 41 7/8" (I usually choke down about 1/2" from there so call it 41.5" playing length).  While its not technically a 26* fairway wood, I found it to be higher launching than Ping's G430 max 9w which is 24*.

Anyhow

According to Trackman I hit the 6i roughly 150-155 carry, the 5h is usually my 160-165 yd club and the 7w is my 170-175 yd club.

All have a nice high flight with no issues stopping them on a green even with my slower speed and they gap off nicely.

For reference I usually draw the ball and have a hard time getting enough height and spin on my shots so this setup helps.

I then go into a G425 SFT 5w which is 19* and is my 180-190 yd club..  190-200 if its very dry out and I get more run out with it.

Thank you. I’m not a great ball striker. Never could get decent elevation out of my 5i, which is 23*. It was my 150 yard club carry. Substituted it with a 27* 11-wood. The 11-wood goes the same distance but much higher. Where it lands it pretty much stays. Much more predictable that my 5i regarding rollout. A 6i is my longest iron. Have also added a 9-wood and 5HL-wood, which is basically a 7-wood. Still getting used to them but believe they will be much more consistent for my game. Thanks to all for your comments.
