Old Ping's keep calling me

Does anyone else still use classic older (20 years or more) Ping putters? I have a copper Anser 2 from the mid 90's and a nickel Scottsdale Anser from the same period that I just can't keep out of the rotation. When they're in my two Scotties get benched. Ego wise I hate taking a Scotty out of the bag but the Pings seem to continue to call out to me. The Pings are a bit lighter when compared to the Scorries but after a round or two that's forgotten.

I have matching BeCu and BeNi Scottsdale Ansers.  Occasionally I’ll pull them out and mess around on the putting green.  It feels like I’m reuniting with an old friend and things just click. Sadly, it’s usually short lived and I’m back to craving a taste of some modern milled Kool-aid.

I have an Anser 2 I still play, and a fancier version of the same that doesn’t say Ping on it. 😉

You just gotta roll what you like, what looks good to your eye and feels good in your hands.

I don’t think people mess with an individual putter enough to see what they like and don’t. It’s either an internet thing or golf shop employee.

When you make little changes and can actually tell the difference, you’re getting there. Between grip, length, head weight, and counter weight I’ve reconfigured the same putter 20+ different ways in the past couple months, each configuration has at least 100 putts on an actual putting green. I’m no great putter, but I know what I want and don’t want.

It’s the easiest part of the game to control and most overlooked, IMO. Let draining putts be your “ego”.

The highlighted word is one that will ruin your game.   Are Scotty Cameron putters more expensive?  Yes, especially when compared to the examples you mentioned.   Please remember.....COST OF THE PUTTER DOES NOT MAKE IT BETTER OR WORSE.  I used to roll an old, boring MgBr Anser on the fitting stripe at Hot Stix, when I had a chance.  I am no super putter by any stretch, but I could make 14 out of 15, nearly every time.

Play what you love, what works for you or even just what you love to look at.  Life is short and golf is just a game.  When your ego is based on the perceived value of the putter in your bag, it can really open a can of unproductive worms.

They are truly classics for a reason.  They worked and many a player trusted them.  If they work, enjoy every minute and if you rotate in a more expensive putter, enjoy that one just as much.

And this advise comes from a man, Mr. Mann, who makes some of the best milled putters in the Land.

Every time I watch old videos of Seve rolling in putt after putt, these same thoughts roll through my head, especially with that toe stuck way up in the air. Some days I used to have touch like Seve, and life was sweet with a stainless Anser 2. Nothin better than being free and easy with low hands, a high toe, and Pingman 58 grip. A few too many misses, along with old age, and those days, and that putter, are in the rearview mirror. Ah, the days of youth.

The Mann is right.... life is to short to be rolling a putter that is frustrating.

Checked my ego a long time ago on the putting green. Still roll a Scotty but it's banged up a little and kept under a generic black headcover. It just makes putts, rarely 3 putts, its just a fancier version of the Anser 2 and 4 of which I still roll on non playing days at home.

I'll admit I am a Ping fan so am biased, but to me, spotting someone who uses an Anser 2 or a nickel SA is making a much more interesting choice than a Scotty user.  Scotties are everywhere, classic Pings are not. Your ego should be boosted by going back to the Old Guard!  And the lighter heads do sometimes suit some folk, me included (my Scottsdale zip Cushin still gets regular games even though my usual choices are heavy).

Oh yeah....  Check out my very modest, almost "entry level" type of putter collection:

One from each decade: 1964, 1973, 1983, 1996, 2000, 2010.

Wilson 8802, Ping Pal, Ping B60, Odyssey DF550, "Clone" mallet (Odyssey Rossie), and my pride & joy - Odyssey White Hot 2.0 XG 1.

Ping Darby. Bought it at practice in HS when I was 17. I've tried/played 3 other putters, including a SC.   That's 27 years I've owned an used that putter.

I've added a counter balanced super stroke slim grip with a 50g weight and currently about 7 strips of lead tape in the pocket behind the ball.  It's a light putter to begin with, the grip and weight help keep me from picking it up.
