Survey: What tee size do you use off the tee?

Recommended Posts

Hi there... just wanted to get a feel for what size tee do you normally use for your driver?  2-3/4" or 3-1/4" tee?   and this survey is just for a normal drive, not much wind..etc....

I'm so used to teeing it up using a 3-1/4" tee that i just recently noticed that i've been teeing it up too high off the face of the driver.  I'm thinking of switching back to 2-3/4" tees to avoid this or i can just push the tee down more to get it lower 🙂

Do you play on concrete with grass on top? Just push the tee down further, it's not that complicated.

Adding to that....... Dr. Scholls or Odor-X powder spray. Experiment with tee height. Check Strike location. Repeat.

Most folks play their tees too high for the ball position they choose. I've rarely seen anybody play it too low.

This.

Understand how your tee height effects your impact location on the club face.

Foot spray is such a great tool to dial in aspects of your driving such as this.

Like i said in my original post, i could push it down more, but i wanted to eliminate my bad habit of teeing it too high by switching to the 2-3/4" tees.

Fair but are you teeing it up the exact same with the shorter ones? Like you can still go too low or too high possibly.

For me I use Western Birch Tees that have a paint band on them and I'll push the longer tee down to a certain point for specific clubs. At least that way it's semi consistent, or if not I just line up the head behind the ball to make sure it's at a proper height

i do use the tee that have the paint band also and i've been instinctively been pushing it just to the line every time, then last week i really got down to the grass and check the ball height and the ball is teed up too high and not the recommended 1/2 of the ball above driver head.  And that's the reason i would like to switch to the 2-3/4" tees with the painted band as well and tee it lower every time.

Also, if you place the 3-1/4" tees with the paint band to the face of your driver,  you will notice that the ball is teed up way too high... like 3/4 of the ball is above the driver and not half.

I just push in the tee until the ball is at the height I want in reference to the driver crown.

Usually I want the about 1/2 the ball above the driver crown. If I want to hit my "FW finder shot", I tee it down so that only ~1/4 of the ball is above the crown.

Weird thing is i thought i was doing the same thing... 1/2 the ball above the driver, but when got down to the ground and check with the 3-1/4" tee - the ball was way pass the crown... more like 3/4.  And i use a tee that has a paint band to indicate where to tee it up every time.

And that's why i was thinking of using the 2-34" tees to eliminate the guess work.

That's why you check and adjust, you sound like you're just stabbing the tee into the ground and assuming all is good to go.

Watch the pros they'll place the tee in the ground, check the height and adjust if necessary.

That's why foot spray really helps.

Spend a few days at the range, testing out tee heights and where the strike location is on the face of the driver.

Start getting a good sense of what the tee height looks like for proper impact location.

I do check from the address position if the ball is teed up 1/2 the ball off the crown, but like i said if you really get down to the ground and check, you will be surprised that the ball is teed higher than what you see at address position.  And that's why i'm thinking of switching to the 2-3/4" tees to eliminate that issue.

I will experiment this weekend though to see if my theory works 🙂

that would be nice thing to do if we have grass driving ranges here.   Unfortunately, we only have mats 😞   Only way to test them now is on course, which i will do this weekend.  Thanks

That's a bummer.

I think foot spray is such a great tool for this kind of testing. I get really bummed out when my range goes to mats only (which they do occasionally for maintenance).

Step 1: Go to driving range

Step 2: Pick up some of the 2 3/4 tees people inevitably leave around

Step 3: Hit on range or rounds with newly acquired tees until you know if they work better or not

Cost of said experiment to RogerDunn59: $0

Value of said experiment to RogerDunn59: Priceless

Please feel free to send my $497.36 to my PP address. Note: while my tone is sarcastic (it wasn't to be a jerk, just to make it humorous), I honestly think this is the best and simplest way to test it. Either you'll like it better or you won't.

🙂  that's all good if we have grass driving ranges in Los Angeles.  We only have mats here due to the high number of people that practice and tear up the grass.  We used to, but maintenance couldn't keep up.  But i will experiment on the course this weekend.

So are you a 3.25 or 2.75 kinda guy?

That does make it harder. Too bad you don't have your own rubber ones you could cut down. I use 2.75. Used 3.25 for a bit but I don't tee it up high enough to need them. Easier to get the height right with 2.75 (though I always check with my club after) and also the longer ones break easier if putting them further into the ground. So it's better for both my golf game and the environment. 😎

Hey Roger,

I use a 3.25in tee.  My method of getting a repeatable height is to use my middle finger as a gauge.  I put the tee with the ball on it into the ground with my middle finger riding down the side of the ball/tee.  Once my finger is firmly touching the ground I know my tee height is set.  This puts the equator of the ball about even or a bit below the top line of the driver.  I can do the same thing with the 2.75in tee, but find it a bit more difficult.

That's the point why i would like to switch back to 2.75 to have the right height each time.  The 3.25 tees seems to be too high and harder to push down especially when the tee box is hard.  BTW i use Pride Professional plastic tees 🙂 so no issues of breaking for me.
