Dress/Suit shirts

Looking for a couple nice shirts, Paul Fredrick looks nice, has some great looking stuff.

They have one I really like, but only a button down collar, is that a no-no?

As with all fashion things, you will be told probably one of 3 things:

1) Someone's die hard opinion and that it is the "only way"

2) Someone who says - who cares, wear what you want

3) The majority who say something like - I prefer it this way because... or tradition suggests.....

Im in a suit 4 days a week and avoid any button down collars in a suit or tie/blazer.  If it's just a blazer, I still try to stay away from the button down because I think it dresses down the blazer.   If it is a less formal sport coat, maybe - but I typically still prefer no button down.  I use the magnet collar stays to keep the collar from spreading too open like a 70's porn star.  Usually, my more casual shirts (not with a jacket) are the button down collar.

I see people wearing button down collars with suits often, but to me it just does not look polished.  It does not offend me, nor do I think it is completely unprofessional - just not my preference.

Ive never worn Paul Fredrick.  I have nothing against it, just know what fits me and stay there.  My go to is David Donahue for more dressy and/or patterns with ties.  I also stock up at Dillards/Belk with the Roundtree & York Gold for a lot of my white dress shirts since they have a decent structure, decent durability and relatively cheap.  I don't feel bad when the neck line gets too soiled and turns to a light tan..

William F Buckley like button down and he stylin yo!

You gotta wear what you like cause you’ll feel it! But I’d say unless you know the designer, go try stuff on, even dress shirts, if possible. Last thing you need is you take your jacket off and it’s all poofy and what not

My first and middle names are reversed from my grandfather's.  They named their first son the same way as mine, but he died before reaching 6 months.  My dad gave me his dad's cuff links that have my middle initial (grandfather's first name) on them.  I was all set to wear them at a wedding this spring, because it will likely be the last one in the family, but turns out my cuffs were not cut to handle cuff links.  So if you're thinking cuff links, make sure to ask for that.

Given I only wear a suit to a wedding or a funeral anymore, I can't tell you any more than that.

Appreciate all the replies, after much research, no go on the button down with a nice suit, not as clean a look. I found a place to try some shirts from, easy return/exchange.

I am liking the semi spread collar.

I did one of those deals - they are a good fit for me as well.  Pretty good quality for the price too.

I got 3 semi spread collar dress shirts, light gray, gray/white check, and white with silver stripes, 2 in extra slim, one in slim. The extra slim fits best, but the slim is also a good fit. I ordered my normal dress shirt size..

Very rare for me to wear a suit or shirt but when I do it is always button down, Ben Sherman. Old habits die hard, been wearing Ben Sherman since the 70's when our dress was influenced by the music we listened to. Still following the same bands now and most of them are still touring 40 years later. I never wanna grow up!

6'2 220 44Jacket, 34 pant.

17/34.5. Non-Iron Royal.  I always wear an undershirt if I have a jacket to hopefully not have the pit circles if I take the jacket off.

Most of my dress shirts are CT. They have a few different cuts/fits on the shirts, they are machine washable and mostly non-iron. I have had several that lasted for a few years and overall are pretty good quality. Highly recommend. They survived my 2 years living in London commuting to work on a bike through Islington/Angel everyday.

I've got a closet-full of Tyrwhitt shirts. Stylish, great fit, and wear well. Now that I'm retired, they don't get nearly as much use, but still look great when they do come out for the appropriate occasions. Also, I'm a French cuff / cuff links guy, so love their selection for that.
