Medical injury question - wrist pain

Jackal

Recommended Posts

I've hit fat shots over the years that stung or hurt a little.

Saturday I was practicing and hit a fat shot that had a large root of some kind in the dirt.

It stung a little, but I kept on hitting..

A few hours later, when I would move it a certain way ,there was pain from wrist , thru the elbow and towards the shoulder

It felt like a string running thru there.

Has anyone here had an injury like that from a golf shot?

I played Sunday, and it was a little touchy. No divots. I tried to pick everything clean.

Today it's a lot better, but if I make a hammer motion the wrist still tingles .

Thanks for in info or experiences you have on this.

If it persists, I'll see a doctor.

I'm just looking for a time frame for healing, and maybe some tips on healing it quicker.

Sorry, to hear it. Speaking fom experience, take time off and let it heal. You don't want it to be a chronic issue. I had some success with a cortisone shot from the ortho doctor.

Thanks. I'm hoping to heal without any medical treatment.

I haven't talked to anyone that has had this injury that went up their arm.

Usually they have golfers elbow, or just a wrist sprain.

Thanks again.

Consider also seeing a physical therapist if your insurance allows you to without getting a doc's referral. Most of these injuries are tendonitis or trigger point (muscle knot) related (or both). All a doctor will do is XRay it and tell you to get some rest, or tell you to go to PT if it continues to hurt. The PT will usually be just as good as an ortho at diagnosing the difference between soft-tissue injuries that they can help treat or if it's an actual joint tissue injury in which case you'd need an MRI. I usually like to just cut out the ortho middleman unless absolutely necessary (mostly because every ortho I've ever seen has been kind of a dick).

Thanks for all the info.

As of now, it seems to be fully healed.

I'm still going to be easy with it .

I can lean on a wall and hold myself up with that hand.

I've had just a hurt wrist in the past, but that pain going up the arm had me concerned.

If something changes I'll post it here .

Thanks again .

Hit a hybrid with a decent divot at Tustin Ranch.... left wrist is still jacked 5-6 years later

That's what scares me .

I don't want to make it worse. Hope yours eventually heals back.

I've been using ice on it a night, and running hot water on it in the  shower.

Also, try to adjust what you are doing that strains the wrist. If you use the computer alot. I found that a touch pad works best, instead of a regular mouse.

Maybe do a winter off from any sort of a full swing. I’m not your doctor, but bone and tendon “recovery” time is measured in months and seasons. Not days. If you can spare it, get a medical professional on your team for this. You’ve only got one body.

Injuries happen. Injuries unfortunately tend to increase risk of further injury. You’ve been brave to ask for help here but this is the peanut gallery. You need to share your experience with a medical professional if you want to truly sleep easy on this.

There’s a reason athletes and celebrities seem to bounce back from injuries. It’s because they pay for and participate in regimens that are evidence based ways to heal. This includes not doing the thing that got you injured for a while.

If you’ve got physio for example, you’d be assessed and taught exercises to strengthen the supporting areas.

If you’ve got a good trainer you’ll also be doing exercises that stimulate your body around impact but avoid using the injured piece ie anti-rotation.

BUT you messed up your hand! You don’t know how to customize such routines to a person who injured their hand! Pay someone(s) who actually love learning about exactly this sort of thing. They can help you. Take advantage of the accumulated knowledge from hundreds and thousands of other people who have hurt their hands by consulting with a chiro/physio/medical professional.

Please don’t be just proud on this. You can be proud and have others on your side. When you ask for help, you get to gain from hard earned knowledge. Most of which was learned too late to help the person/injury that it was learned from. Consider that.

No clue what you're dealing with, but I've had a collection of wrist injuries from sprains to TFCC to fracture, lost an entire season by not letting a small injury heal correctly and it turned into a big injury.   It seems like you're not really interested in the stop playing advice, but I would stop playing and see a Dr. to make you're not dealing with something small that could turn into something big.

Yeah, it starts feeling good and I now I want to go out and play.

This past week, I've just been chipping.

Due to weather,I'll be out of golf for 2 weeks.

I would like to know what it is.

My everyday job puts a lot on it

I'm a machinist ,and operate a lot of big machines, turn large wheels and levers, etc .

Compared to everyday, the golf is a vacation from my constant mechanical movements and lifting heavy weights.

I also get a lot of shop use with large hammers.

As has been suggested, a proper medical assessment is in order.  Look for an MSK specialist.  At a minimum you need an X-ray and ultrasound to determine the cause.
Given that your work is also a stress factor, you don’t want to make it worse, or cause further damage which could put you out of work, never mind not being able to golf.
There's some 27 bones in the hand and wrist, also tendons and ligaments.   Lots can go wrong.
Get this looked after.

My man I cannot emphasize enough how much you need to get this checked on. Honestly if you’re strapped for it consider claiming it as a workplace injury if where you live lets you get rehab for workplace related stuff insured.

You will not be able to feel the differences yourself. Further I can guarantee you that the subjective perception of “ it’s back to normal” ALWAYS happens before the tissue is actually back to normal.

Your body will adapt to this injury. The only question is how.

If you keep riding this out unattended you will learn to live with it. That’s life.

If you get help, you will also learn to live with it. Again, that’s life. The rehab and help you get will put you in a much better place.

I can say that you will never know the difference no matter which route you choose. I can also say that people who get help have much better outcomes. I deal with people who come in after “nursing” an injury for years. I also deal with people who’ve had recent injuries and are seeking help immediately. I think you can guess which type of person has a better chance of recovery.

with old injuries, past a certain point all that we can do is offer treatments to lessen the pain. - a lot of the time, old injuries cannot be recovered from. The body has “healed” by itself in such a way that it lets the person keep doing things BUT it causes pain, limits mobility and and loading capacity,  etc.

Please consider that there is going to be a massive difference in your quality of life and what your inured hand is capable of.
you’re just going to get used to whatever the outcome is, that’s how evolution has hardwired us.

Animals don’t care about old wounds, they just keep on going - and we do too. Please consider that you could get help with this. Something that animals can’t do. It’s the advantage of living in a world full of other people.

Inflammation is just the start. Scarification is real, calcification is real.  You won’t notice these things until they become so problematic that you can’t ignore them - that’s just how we’re hardwired to be. Same reason why people ignore back injuries while working until they hit their later years and it’s suddenly unbearable- it was actually causing harm the whole time but not enough for that person to act.

I beg you to be proactive about this.

Broken/stressed bones can heal fully if attended to properly. They can also turn into soft bone messes that cause pain, arthritis, and significantly reduced ability to load and bear forces.

Again , I’m not your doctor.  I am in the field.

This gets worse as it keeps going.  Forget golf all together, if you're livelihood depends on your wrist/body, then you should have been at the Dr yesterday. Posting on a golf forum is the last thing you should be doing right now.  It could be nothing, or this could be major surgery with months of recovery waiting to happen.  Stop messing with it and get it looked at now.

My orthopaedic surgeon told me that any wrist injury that is going to heal itself will do so within 30 days of rest. If it has not fixed itself in 30 days, you will need some professional help.

The fact I am quoting an orthopaedic surgeon might tell you that my wrist did not get better after 30 days....

Update:

I got in to see a PT yesterday.

He said something in my wrist was inflamed.

I'm supposed to ice it every evening, and take ibuprofen for any pain.

He also gave me a prescription for Cambia ( anti-inflammatory).

He said with me doing manual labor and heavy work, that was in my favor because the hands and arms are stronger than average.

His description of this injury is ( carpenter wrist).

He said it is common for a right handed carpenter while in a bind to grab a hammer with his left hand and swing wrong, miss, and have a glancing blow that will do this.

The exercise I was given is to imagine I'm driving a nail with a hammer.

Do slow motion reps with my left hand .

This can be done anytime  during the day when I get a chance.

I should be good as new in 10 days.

Thanks for all the help and advice.

Hope this will help someone else in the future.

Happy Thanksgiving

Also: I can wear an Ace bandage or a wrist brace if I want to during activity for the next 2 weeks .

I would definitely recommend wearing a wrist brace for any activity that requires use of your wrist until it completely heals.

I will when I can, but when you're running a lathe you can't wear rings, watch , long sleeves, etc.

I've know people that have lost hand and fingers that way.

Sometimes, I run a lathe 10-12 hours a day .
