Thoughts on this video

Came across this video the other day and it was very interesting to me. The thought being that we all probably grip the club too tight and don’t let it square itself. I’m interested to get to the range and try it. Anyone see this?

I'm a regular follower of this guy's channel, and these instructional vids are gold, in my opinion. I have tried this and a couple of the other tips with some success so far. Then again practice options are limited in my neck of the woods now that all the courses are closed for the winter, so I'm saving all these to watch again come spring.

 

In his course vlog videos, the banter between Liam and the other GolfMates is pretty hilarious too ...

It makes a lot of sense- I have discovered, forgotten, and rediscovered how important it is to not have excess tension in the swing over and over again. To the point where about a month ago I changed the background on the computer that runs my simulator to a large image of "tension" as a reminder to not forget again.

 

Working on positions, etc. it tends to just naturally build up and up and next thing you know your whole body is tense and the swing is the furthest thing from athletic.

Exactly! 

 

Whenever I am playing or practicing, as soon as I tense up it all goes pear-shaped and I'm living up to my user name!

Most grip the club too loosely IMO. Not even close. I almost never see someone gripping the club too tightly.

Everyone is trying to keep the stupid bird alive when they should have killed the thing a long time ago.

If you have to think about grip pressure, it means the club is positioned incorrectly in the hands. I've shown this many times to club golfers and it always had an immediate effect. They usually forget it and go back to their old ways though because it doesn't feel comfortable at first.

Too loosely and too wrong on top of that.

 

Do you see more people have too much tension in their arms and shoulders? I see a lot of tension in higher handicaps...but really only in younger stronger people now that I think about it. Its a good skill to have no tension with proper structure in the swing.

Some. I know the muscles in your forearm are responsible for controlling your fingers/grip pressure, but you can still have "loose" forearms and an elbow and especially up into the shoulders. I see a decent number of tense shoulders/arms, almost never too tight a grip.

I was playing around with the squeeze the towel feel for the grip that Rory learned from Cowen. Def feels more stable throughout the swing.

I read an article in which the guy (Snead?) who said to hold your clubs like a bird later said he did not mean it, he just said that because most amateurs held the club too tight.

 

The reigning paradigm in golf instruction still: the student cannot handle the truth.

As I’ve said many times on this forum, the second half of the bird statement from Snead is, “Like an eagle trying to get away from you.”

 

The hard part is having a firm hold on the club without tension in neck and shoulders.

 

This is another bad myth that fools players.  
 

I see this all day every day from the bird savers.
