Scotland in Sept 2024… What courses should we play?

Our son is going to college at St. Andrews…  and voila, looks like i can do a week of golf as a 4some… After i drop him off.. .

So,  say 5 rounds, 1 per day, two “must plays” and 3 hidden gems…. We could drive an hour max from St. Andrews or Aberdeen or wherever we wind up staying.  

 

What would you suggest?    Early September 2024…

St Andrews Old Course would probably be No 1 on the list. After that I might say Carnoustie, others would say Kingsbarns or Gleneagles Kings.

As for hidden gems, not too many of them anymore. Lesser known might be Elie, Lundin, Crail, Leven, Scotscraig, all the St Andrews courses apart from TOC and so on and on. Cant go wrong really.

These are all within an hour of St Andrews.

Buy the 3 day ticket from St. Andrews Links. Play Jubilee, New, and Castle. Then do the 48 hour ballot for The Old Course each day. Then add Carnoustie.

There are no "hidden" gems in fife, but there are many excellent courses that cost less than the biggest names. Elie, Crail, Lundin, Leven and Ladybank are all really good. Also near Carnoustie check out Panmure and Monifieth.  After a couple big names, those listed above are a great way to complete any itinerary in the region.

Hmmm. Is your son in halls for the first year? I assume you will be in a hotel or something....

 

Old Course is a given; then really anything you fancy, I am guessing you have a car so Aberdeen is an hour and a half away. Royal Aberdeen Week 1 in September is empty, week 2 has some stupid comp on for 3 days(not a happy bunny) so dint know how that would affect visitor times. Yes we just got sent the diary for 2024.
