This of course is not just happening at my muni but is a systemic problem around the country and around the world

I know, and have known over the years, many instructors. You'd think I would have come across at least one that resembles his characterization by now if it's so prevalent

God, if that were only true and I could get a decent tee time and 18 holes in under 5 hours!

Like the first article, this makes me grateful for the time I’ve spent with various instructors over the years.  I’ve always come away with not only a better understanding of what I was doing, AND a path forward.

 

But in EVERY case, before I’ve booked a lesson with any instructor, that person has been recommended to me by someone better than me.  In that regard, I can’t imagine that I’m at all unusual; golf instruction (and or acting) is expensive and time consuming; I just don’t think most people take a lesson with an instructor about which they know little or nothing and just hope for the best.  Likewise, I don’t think it’s an idea to be taken seriously that you’d continue to go to someone terrible that isn’t helping you get better.

 

I do agree with one thing he writes, which is our tendency to think that we are one “secret” away from mastery.  But I don’t think that’s an instruction proble; it’s just human nature.  We want instant gratification, not grinding practice sessions.

 

A final note: If the author had turned this paper in in a class I was teaching, I’d either fail him or at the very least have him rewrite it with proper citations.  You can’t say things like “it is widely accepted” without evidence, and he does that sort of thing all through the article.  Something doesn’t become true because you say it loudly over and over.

💯 That is not an article 😉, but I’m not really sure what to call it!  I expect that someone writing what amounts to a blog post isn’t being paid like a WSJ op-ed writer.…However, when posts on an Internet forum have better grammar, citations, and structure than one someone was paid, even a nominal amount, to write, that is discouraging.
