new country Club Advice Wilmington, NC

Hi Everyone,

I just moved to Wilmington from Pittsburgh pa and am looking for a new club to join down here. I haven't found too much info besides that eagle point seems to be the best rated, but has low local membership? Landfall CC and Porters Neck CC seem runners up but all 3 seem very pricey as well. My favorite things about northern clubs are events like 3 day member guests, weekly games, etc. I would be joining as a young professional member and plan on living in Wilmington for quite a long time. Any advice is appreciated!

Have you looked at Cape Fear CC? Donald Ross course.

I did, it looks solid, but from what i saw online facilities seem dated. I believe it is also the same initiation fee as Landfall which has 2 full courses and a 5th 9 by dye and nicklaus with what seems like better facilities. seems like you're getting more for the same price at Landfall unless Cape Fear made any updates.

I know there are a couple privates in Leland. Compass Point, and Cape Fear National. I have heard good things about CFN, but I don’t really know anything about Compass. I don’t know if you have to live in the communities to be a member. I knew a guy that was a pro in the area, and he said they were pretty busy. I would be very interested in Porters Neck because of the McConnell network.

I don't get the Donald Ross comment.

Cape Fear was opened in 2009 as public, but was built to be private, which I think it is now.
Compass Point was opened in 2016.
Both are also new housing developments.

I’m not sure what course you are thinking of, but Cape Fear CC is a very old private club in downtown Wilmington; it has never been a public course, and it is surrounded by old homes.  It is a Ross, though there have been quite a few changes over the years.  I think Kris Spence took it back to the original Ross design as much as possible; they have the original Ross drawings framed and hanging in the men’s locker room.

I did not refer to Cape Fear National as a Ross course. I said Cape Fear CC was a Ross course . Two completely different courses. Claims to be the oldest private CC in NC.

It's weird that Cape Fear National in Leland NC would use this similar name, instead
of the Brunswick Forest community they built it in.

Maybe because there was already a Brunswick Plantation golf course further down Hwy 17 near the state line?

Who knows the real reason. The golf course is much closer to Jackeys Creek than the Cape Fear river too.

Being originally from the area but moved away about 25 years ago I marvel at what's become of the area. As a teen I got to play Cape Fear CC in a couple jr. tournaments. It was like visiting Augusta National for a kid that was used to playing cheap public golf. I worked at the Nicklaus course at Landfall the summer after my freshman year in college outside the golf shop 30 years ago.

I'm sure any country club is going to be pricey given the current economy and how the  Wilmington/Brunswick County area is booming with retirees.

I'd also look at the Hampstead area north of Wilmington.

Its been a whille but I've played all of the above and would recommend Porter's Neck or Cape Fear CC. Cape Fear National wasn't anything special when I played it and I've never been that impressed Landfall, its true that it has multiple course but it also has a lot more members. Taking Eagle Point out of the equation, Cape Fear CC is where I would look at but its nice that Wilmington Muni is a greqaat old Ross too.
