How do I know which is best for my stroke?

You have to be able to assess your stroke or get fitted.

 

IME, face balanced works best for straight back and forward stroke, no arc to speak of.  Various degrees of Toe hang works best with arc putting strokes, like my medium toe flow.

Agree on the fitting but no such thing as no arc in putting, everyone has arc and low arc doesn't always mean less toe hang as well.

I would forget the generic protestations regarding toe hang and test for aim and roll (launch and accuracy). Horizontal finger balancing for toe hang doesn’t make much sense in terms of a putting stroke.

ping's fitting system is based more on closure rate.  It was really eye opening for me.  I had been through some SAM fittings that recommended face balanced putters but with ping I was fit with more toe hang.  Seems to be working well

Closure rate should be the focus for toe hang not arc like Ping does. But even then my results were less toe hang but rolled above average better. 

 

Nothing is set in stone.

My response was simple, or general.  This is NOT the place for writing a thesis response.  Yes, there is NO such thing in golf as straight, so some of us simplify.  I hit the ball as straight as humanly possible.  Don't tell anyone, but it has an invisible curve, every time, go figure.

 

From the time I started golf to 2012, I played a face - balanced, center shafted putter.  The problem was, I missed putts that should have been made.  In 2012, I used Callaway's putter fitting online page, answered a series of questions, and it said I needed a moderate toe hang offset shaft putter, so bought the SC tour weighted California Monterey putter, and been making more birdie putts ever since.

In simple terms, (Disclaimer 😁: assuming the putter fits your length, lie, loft and you can roll the ball where your aimed)

 

If you pull lots of putts with face balanced, go with more hang.

 

If leave everything out to the right (rh golfer), face balanced can "sometimes" help. 

 

If you can't line up to and roll the ball over a coin 12-24" in front of your ball on a straight putt, go for a fitting. 

 

If your stroke/club head moves away/out  from your target/aim line in your back stroke, go for a lesson.  

 

Note that all the above can also be affected by alignment/offset of the putter. But this is another bonus of going for a good fitting, you get to see the affects in real time. 

 

If you don't know your specs in the disclaimer, fitting is prob a very good investment.
