New stand bag - Ping vs Mizuno vs Ogio vs Titleist

Recommended Posts

I am on the hunt for a replacement stand bag as my current TaylorMade bag has a torn internal pocket (currently with TM for warranty evaluation). I generally carry clubs, so lighter weight and comfortable straps are a bonus, but also after something durable.

Given this is the second TaylorMade bag I have had with a pocket tearing next to the seam, I am inclined to look to another brand. After having a look at what's available here in Australia I have narrowed it down to:

  • Ping Hoofer
  • Mizuno BR-D4
  • Ogio Fuse 4
  • Titleist Players 5

All four are pretty close price-wise ($250 - $300 AUD)

Is there anything members can suggest I look at? or particular reasons to stay clear from any on the list?

Thanks

For me personally, I couldn't imagine using anything other than a Ping bag. Again, its all personal preference, but to me they are simply the best and have been forever. Ping has the best leg system, best straps, lightest and most comfortable to carry. Some complain about clubs tangling, but I don't find it to be a major issue. I use the Hoofer Lite because it is a little smaller, but the original Hoofer is good too, just a little larger. I have probably had 5 or 6 Ping bags over my ~30 year golf life, and I have been happy with all of them.

Titleist Players 5 is my bag and I like it for the most part. It is solid for cart use with the strap pass thru and easy strap removal. Also have liked it the times when I carry, although that is not near as often.

I do like the Ping bags as well though and will consider for my next bag. They seem to have more pockets and features for organization which I like. The Players 5 has less pockets, which some may like.

Agreed Sun Mountain makes a nice bag. Great for carrying and minimal club tangle. I used to have a 4.5 LS but got away from it as it wasn’t quite as good on a cart. It seemed to always be leaning one way or the other and my clubs would always be bunched up. But if you are mostly carrying, I would definitely give it or the 2.5/3.5 a look.

Agreed 100% I actually sold my 4.5 to a buddy to get the 3.5, for the same reason plus it fit in my travel case better.  But I love the 3.5

Thanks for the suggestions so far. The Sun Mountain bags look good, but it doesn't look like the 3.5 is available here in Australia. The distributor only has the 2.5+ and 4.5 listed on their website.

I will swing past a couple of local shops over the weekend to see what they have, but at this stage, I am probably leaning towards the Ping Hoofer or Mizuno BR-D4 (which I can get on sale at a decent discount).

Ping Hoofer is the gold standard if you ask me. It's just about perfect. The straps carry comfortable, pocket layout is great, has a cart strap pass through if you ride.

Tangle ... And I live Ping bags ... But there is always tangle.

When Sun Mountain made Titleist bags, they were the best. I don't think they've been the same since they changed.

I played two rounds with a caddie recently and he literally thanked me for owning a Ping Hoofer.  He said it was the best bag in terms of comfort of the straps and the stand mechanism.  The only knock on the Hoofer I ever read about is club tangle but that doesn't really bother me .  I had a Sun Mountain previously which is also a solid bag.  I've converted to Ping though.

You are correct.

The worst part of the changes was Titleist went to the club-tangling tilting floor mechanism when they left Sun Mountain. But the overall quality is worse now, as well.

I still have a Titleist Ultralight from the last season they were made by Sun Mountain (maybe 2014-ish?). Don't use it every day but it's my travel and vacation bag. Every time I pull it out I shake my head at the comparison to current Titleist bags.

Anyone know who makes that Srixon lightweight carry bag rock bottom has on sale right now?

The Sun Mountain or Ping bags really are the best quality, function, utility combination IMO.

Agreed.  Those were my go-to carry bags in the 2005-2014 era.  Probably the most modern comp would be a SM 3.5.

I vote Hoofer Lite if you’re going to carry.  It may seem only a 1/2 pound lighter than the regular Hoofer (on paper), but it carries so much lighter.  Ample pocket space for carrying as well as a short trip.  Mine has made numerous trips to Sand Valley, Myrtle Beach, and Vegas.  I’ve never wished it had more space.
