Is it weird to tip your driver and 3 wood the same amount?

Recommended Posts

I know typically you're use to seeing woods being tipped a little more compared to the driver.

All depends on the person and mechanics.  My Driver and 3 wood shafts, each are tipped 1/2", been doing that for years.  Even though Fujikura suggests no tipping for Driver.

Not weird at all but not as common practice to tip both the same.

Not weird at all.   Many golfers like to go with a completely different higher launching (softer tipped) profile for the fairway.    That results in a much more drastic difference than you'd get with a small difference in tipping amount.

The reason I ask is because I'm going to switch to the core head for taylormade. I need more forgiveness, but that head spins a little more than I like so that's why I was thinking about tipping it half an inch.

And if I tip my driver, it only makes sense to me to tip my 4 wood as well.

Then I'm probably not the best one to ask.   I feel tipping should only be done for feel only, not launch and spin management.  It's not very reliable for that.  Tweaking the loft is way more effective and reliable.   But there are alternative opinions out there - nothing wrong with it if you can actually make it work.  It just has the potential to be an expensive experiment since you can't undo the tipping if it ends up making things worse instead of better.

But according to Tom Wishon - the first 1/2" doesn't really do much to either the feel or the dynamic loft delivered.   You'd need to go at lest 3/4" to 1" before you might expect much influence on the feel or performance.  And even then it's still way more about feel than performance.

Sorry forgot to address it.   Not really - especially if your only motivation is based on launch and spin management and not on feel.   It's a completely different head, shaft, and club.  So the tipping decision for the fairways should ideally be made completely independently than for the driver.

Even if it is for feel - typically people will not use the exact same shaft model and weight in the fairway as they do in the driver - so you shouldn't assume you need the same tipping, especially as the fairway head is heavier so some additional adjustment to the tipping amount is common (but not required).

As a short cut, it's a common practice to use the difference in the manufacturers recommended tipping for that.  e.g. if the recommendations is 0" for the driver and 1/2" for the 3wd, then if you wanted an additional 1/2" for the driver, you might add an additional 1/2" (bringing it up to 1") for the 3wd as well.   But since you're generally working with a different shaft model/weight,  it's only really a rough estimate, not any kind of hard and fast rule.
