Srixon Utility Iron build.. need shaft advice

mvvraz

Recommended Posts

I'd like to put together a utility iron that will serve as a backup to my 5 wood

I generally hate boardy shafts, and rotate between the AD DI and HD in my driver. I am basically looking for a shaft with heavy kick to install in the utility iron to promote higher flight and more spin

I use my 5 wood to shoot for greens a lot and barely use it off a tee which will be the intended usage for this iron

Thanks in advance for the recommendations!

Several options. Since you like the GD line you could go with their DI shaft. Evenflow black hybrid shaft has some kick. Even the kbs PGH has some. Since you want height, I’d go 70-80g in it to start. Will likely be more flexy then and get you more speed. I did used to have a recoil dart f4 65g in mine but struggled timing it up. Would hit some bombs with it. If you are interested let me know.
An 18° iron will launch lower than a 5w or hybrid so don’t expect a kicky shaft to get a 5w like launch. FWIW, I have the kbs on my DI and I was able to get it to stop on a par three green. Granted the tee box was sloped so I actually hitting up more. YMMV. Good luck.

I started with a Diamana Thump in my ZX4 and recently moved into Axiom 105.  My results with Axiom are pretty spot on to what you describe here (it's still stable, but does have a bit of kick to it).

Like @VanTheMan0519, I've been thinking about moving from Axiom into Ventus HB Black to dial the kick back down and give me a more penetrating ball flight, but when I was reading your post Axiom definitely came to mind.

I don't like pronounced, but a slight kick is fine by me.  In the new T200 17' 2 iron, I've been using Tensei AV Raw White Hybrid 90S at 39.75' - it's worth 205-220, straight or low bullet if needed, from the tee or choked-down off the deck.

I face 2-4 club winds often.  Hitting a penetrating ball flight with any iron is more about setup and how it's executed than going with a tip stiff shaft such as TX Ventus HB Black.  If you're considering that, more options exist with Ventus Blue HB.

Tour AD driving iron. Peoples golf a sponsor here built mine. Exactly what you are wanting. I use mine off the tee mostly and feel I hit it too high. Looking at a Ventus black possibly.

Ventus Black HB is a completely different animal, EI profile and launch/spin wise compared to the Tour AD driving iron.  I have one in my hybrid and it's low/low with very little kick to it while still having some feel to it.  I found the Tour AD driving iron to have some kick to it while launching higher and spinning more than Ventus Black HB.

You could go DI HY or IZ HY if you want to stay in the GD family.  They don't kick quite as hard as the DI but do launch on the higher side with mid spin.  IZ HY will feel more linear though.  VF HY is supposed to be released within the next few months but that's gonna be mid-low/low.  Ventus Blue HB is another option that's mid/mid with some kick to it that's solid.

As stated there are several Graphite Design options that would be no brainers, AD-DI Hybrid or AD-IZ Hybrid. Other shafts in the smooth/not boardy family are the Ventus Blue HB, Aldila Rogue Black Hybrid, Tensei Blue Hybrid, and just about anything that bills itself as other mid bend point or mid launch/spin.

A word of caution though, all of these shafts are going to have higher balance points than the ones that the Srixon Utility comes stock with so swingweight will go down noticeably. Srixon uses very light heads but they can be easily hotmelted if you have the resource. The shaft least likely to require this that fits the "smooth" criteria is the MMT iron shafts (NOT the hybrid versions), something like the 105TX.

Sounds like the AD DI driving iron shaft would fit the bill nicely if you play GD already.
