Played same nine twice, posted a manual 18. Good or no?

If you decide to keep an "alternate handicap" in this way, I'd be interested to hear of the results after a month or two.  My first guess is that there won't be a huge difference to your USGA HI, but I can't be at all sure.

I am probably not going to do down the path of treat all rounds as one or more 9 hole rounds and then combine the 9 hole scores scores. But I probably will (for personal purposes) go down the 'old way' of combining 9 hole scores into 18 hole scores rather than generating an estimated 18 hole score for each 9 hole score.

The results right now are quite interesting when I go down that path. Note that there are 10 9 hole scores in my last 20 scores (and those are the only 9 hole scores that I have posted in the last year or two). My current index of (gulp) 11.8 drops to 9.5 when I go back to the old way of dealing with 9 hole scores. And there are two reasons that big change happens

1) Those ten 9 hole scores (when I combine them) turn into only five 18 hole scores. So I have to include 5 older scores to get to 20 and these older scores are not included in my current index. And they happen to be before my game literally went to hell this year.

2) Right or wrong my two absolute best 9 hole scores got combined into a really good differential (5.8) and in the official system these got seriously diluted by estimated 9 hole scores.

I am not sure what point this makes, but it is interesting to see such a big difference (and to see why that difference happened).

I had quite a few of those over the years. And I agree, and I'm seeing it personally now that I have a handful of events under my belt. The dilution is real.

I played my 1st 9 hole round since the change and shot 39 on a par 34 and had a 20 differential.  It seemed a little higher than what i thought it should be.  Probably correct though, the course is 30.6/96.

17 index (per your profile) and you shot 5 over... and returned a differential 3 points higher than your index? 🤧 Then again, your CH should have been around a 4... but really, not happy that it posted 3 over your current index.

Where did I imply anything about your emotion towards it, crying or otherwise? I was speaking from my own lack of pleasure with it with the "not happy" comment.

(39−30.6)×113/96 = 9.9, which even if you just double it is about a 20 differential.

It's a goofy system for sure.   My kid, who's been in the 1.5-1.9 index range over the last couple weeks posted a couple 9 hole rounds in that time frame of 36 on a 36.3/136 course.  It gave him a 1.7 and 2.0 differential for those 2 rounds.   If he had played them on the same day and added them up and put them in, he'd have had a -0.6 differential.   Putting them as separate 9s is a 1.7 and 2.0 differential counted as 2 rounds.   That's a pretty huge difference if he was only playing 9 hole rounds, or playing 9 hole rounds back to back.   In fact, his handicap would creep up and up if he kept shooting 36 every day, as the expected differential would raise his index and his index would raise his differential.    Good strategy for a sand bagger I guess!

Quick pedantic side trip: (72.6 - 72.0) * 113/136 = -0.5.
