Driver yips...

Recommended Posts

I don't want to say I have full out driver yips, but at least a couple of times per round I hit absolute quackers off the tee screaming to the left and only going about 200 yards.  Sometimes I can salvage from that position, or like today, I was -3 through 6 holes, then double quacked 2 balls into a tree right off the front tee box and lost both of them and made a 9 on a par 5.  Then the rest of the day my best drives were essentially slap shots that I pushed out far enough right to where they were in play/fairway.  It is almost ALWAYS with the driver, but sometimes I might quack one if I'm trying to just kill a 3w.

Has anyone else dealt with this and if so, what did you do to fix it?  I'm debating about getting a mini driver and cutting the shaft to 42" and just taking what it can give me as long as its not left.  I'm long enough to play a 7,100 yard course without a lot of issues (when hitting the driver decent) but man, when its bad like today, 6,200 feels like a slog.

Doesn't sound like the driver yips.  Sounds like a flaw that is finally coming home to roost.  It can happen very suddenly when talent will no longer cover up for bad fundamentals.  Age a little and a little of the talent bleeds off.  Been there.

You sound like me.  Driver's always been a struggle for me.  For me it's a combo of getting too in to out at times with too much face closure.  I pretty much put driver in time out when it's really bad and use my 3 metal.  Like you, I'm long enough to get away with playing 3 metal off the tee.  Maybe post a video so that the community can help you identify your issues and offer solutions/drills.

Without any kind of video/visuals you'll only be able to get generic advice from people that may or may not have any similarities to what you're dealing with.

I’d say I’ve had 2-3 dozen people show up on my lesson and used the phrase driver hips.

The fell into 3 categories

1. Downswing too narrow

2. Club too open

3.  Both

All had something in common.

At some point in their process they tried to:

1. Force lag

2.  Hit up

Charles Barkley is a famous example

Honestly, this might be the best summary of what I see.  I notice I hit the snappers when I'm trying to hit a high one or a hard one (and I notice I typically hit my driver better when I tee it down lower), and I absolutely have the "sergio-esque" whip through impact that I developed as a jr trying to hit it further.

Some things to look at for sure.

Thank you!

Whenever I see one of your posts, I can’t help but think of So-crates Johnson.

I've been known to have that expression.  But, I don't know the last time I got into a phone booth with Bill and Ted.

Do you ever see issues with a combination of 1.) and the face getting too closed?

My normal swing sees me go into left wrist flexion and radial simultaneously (this is not a typo, I realize extension normally pairs with radial). This has been a move I have been trying to ease out of my swing over the last year to add some consistency.

I don’t see that much if at all.  Post it I wanna see it.

Attached below. Apologies for the crappy video quality-this was the only thing I could find “in the cloud”!

I know this angle might not show the radial fantastic but I can see some float loading with flexion simultaneously.
For what’s it worth, I tore my ECU (extensor capri ulnaris) in transition with this same move a year after this vid was taken.

I’d have to see you on hack motion to confirm. But you’re not going  radial and flexing at the same time.

Your shaft wouldn’t be where it is.

Ir you are float loading some radial in transition and then flexing and ulnar around p4.5, I’ve seen that before.
