PXG Generations or Comparable Irons

Over the last few seasons, I moved away from my PXG Gen 2 irons to more traditional forged clubs (rotating Miura CB-57 & Geom Moe).  This week, I took my old Gen 2s out for fun and remembered how much I love the ‘springy’ feel off the face. So, a two-part question for people in the know on here: 

 

(1) if I want to get an updated set of PXGs, what’s the best generation?  My gen 2s are a T/P mixed set. Looks like you can’t really do that in the gen 6 because you’d go to the 317 T (which I understand doesn’t have the same springy feel). So maybe Gen 5? 
 

(2) are there other irons that would have a similar feel to the PXGs I should hit?  I’ve had P790s in the past & didn’t think they were close in terms of feel. But maybe they’ve advanced?  Or maybe there are other options?

Try Gen5 T/P mix, Gen5 is great and they're cheap right now.

I have played PXG irons since Day 1, and have played or hit EVERY generation including the XCOR2's which are so under-rated its crazy.

 

But to your question. I don't really think there is a "BEST" generation starting with the Gen 3's. There is minimal difference between each generation but nothing significant. I'd just go with what fits your eye and what you can afford.

You have to remember that feel is subjective. I've heard people on here rave about how great the 790's feel and others say they felt horribly harsh at impact.

I’m considering upgrading from Gen 4T to 0317T.  Do you have any data or feedback?

Other than my 0317 T’s, my Gen 5 T’s were the best.  I’ve played Gen 1, Gen 3, Gen 5, 0317 CB and 0317 T.

 

But, last look on their website showed dwindling stock.  I don’t know if they get replenished or are in closeout mode.  I haven’t looked in a couple of days.

Cool Clubs has Robo testing of the G5 0311T and 0317T....having owned both, feel goes to the G5 with a more softer feedback.

I agree! Did not pull trigger on 0317T because Gen5 T is just outstanding performance and feel wise. I was going to pick up another set now that they're cheaper, but I came across a brand new set of 0211ST and have always regretted selling my first set of those. I could see them coming out with the 0317 line update next spring because they mostly will be in the 18 month + timeframe by then.

I also like the turf interaction of the Gen 5 better.  I do think the 0317 T gives up a little feel for slightly better consistency.

 

I never got on with the Gen 6 P.  It gave me very inconsistent distances on every club.

I have a set of Gen 2 P irons and I tried a set of Gen 5 P irons and the spin dropped off significantly (which I confirmed on a launch monitor).  I flew several greens with knuckle balls and sent the Gen 5 irons back.  I wanted to like the Gen 5 irons so bad because I love the way they look.  I actually wound up getting a great deal on a brand new set of Cobra Forged tech 2020 irons and absolutely love them.
