When hitting a low amount of greens

I have always been the type of player that doesn't necessarily hit a lot of greens. I score with my short game. I just want to know what your lowest round has been when hitting a low number of greens. Even though I'd love to hit more greens, I just have more fun with these type of rounds trying to get up and down.

I recently shot a 74 and only hit 10 greens in regulation.

Nothing like a 74 but my most recent low score with low GIR % is an 86 with 3 greens hit.

I shot 68 this winter and only hit 9. I missed a couple in the fringe and had a couple good saves. One of the best scrambling rounds I have ever had.

Shot 71 in a tourney hitting only 6 GIR. My buddy was playing behind me and he thought I shot something in the mid-80s.

 

In a tourney, short game is your best friend. :)

I shot a 66 in a tournament at the Golf Club of Texas 4 years ago when I was a senior in high school...By far yhe best putting day of my life.

I was speaking to another member on here the other day about this style of playing.

 

I've always been a cautious player and even if it means hitting a 3 wood or 2 iron, I've done whatever it takes to get the ball in play. The thing is, I've always been a bit cautious with my approach shots as well. I prefer to shape the ball towards the pin but I used to make sure I hit the green in the process.

 

Recently, I started to ask myself why I was doing this. I'm not playing golf for a living anymore so why not make it as much fun as possible. I'm still conservative off the tee (I don't find it fun hitting an approach shot 180 out of the rough) but I've started to become more aggressive when going for the pin. As that particular member put it "Less Nick Faldo, more Greg Norman".

 

It's taken a while to adjust and it certainly tests the short game but on Saturday I shot a 72 (Par 74, 7118 Yards) after hitting no more than 7 greens. From now on, this is the way I'm going to play!

I don't know my best, but it would probably be around 76-77 with hitting 6-7GIR. BTW 10 GIR isn't a terrible ball-striking round hahaha. I'm happy hitting more then 9 GIR, but I'm not the smartest when I'm approaching greens lol

When I was a young man and a good putter I am sure I shot some low rounds because of my putting

 

A couple of years ago I shot 68 with 25 putts I do not remember but heck with 25 putts how many greens could I hit. One of those days everything went in.

 

I am a bit like villa was in that I am always careful with my approaches not to short side and I try and catch green

 

Though my short game has improved I do not believe it can stand the heat most round of too many missed greens in bad places

Those are some nice rounds guys! I know 10 greens isn't a low amount, but when I played high school golf I was mainly a ball striker. I would probably hit 13-14 greens on an average day. I still remember one day when I hit 18 greens and still shot a 73.

 

Since then, I don't really practice too often so I've changed my whole strategy when I golf. I put a lot of work into my putting and it has definitely paid off. So usually all my rounds are scrambling rounds. It just amazes me how all my golfing buddies just want to go practice on the range all day when they should be on the practice green to lower their scores.

1 under with 3 greens hit for 9 holes. Horseshoed the only missed up-and-down on 8, then stiffed a sidehill 9 iron to 2 feet to get back to 1 under.

 

Shot a smooth 72 last year with 27 putts. Only 2 of the 9 one putts were birdies, the rest were par saves. So that'd be only 9 GIR.

74 (72.4/137 course) with 8 GIRS. Only had 26 putts! Just 1 birdie in the bunch.

I shot 67 in the first round of the 07' Azalea Amateur. Only hit 4 GIR. I made 2 putts from the 30-50 foot range and chipped in 3 times. Worst round with my irons EVER, and somehow didnt make a bogey.

I do this quite a bit. I shot 71 one time and I know I couldn't have hit more than 8 or 9 GIR's. I did make 2 50 ft putts from the fringe that day though, which helped.

 

I know what you mean about the short game. I'm a terrible ball striker with the irons, but I hit it long enough and chip well enough to score in the 70s/low 80s consistently. Mainly because my chipping is about that of a +2 hdcp. I probably have more kick in pars from chips than GIR's per round. Wonder how I would shoot if I actually hit some greens?

Scored my lowest gross, 70 hitting 9 greens in regulation.

 

You could say chipping and putting got a little warm.

That's the way I play. I don't hit many greens at all but I always feel more confident having to get up and down rather than having a long 2-putt. I can usually always chip/pitch the ball inside 10 feet (and progressively closer - if I'm just off the green I can usually get it within 4), my score is just a matter of whether I make those putts. I usually shoot around 4 over for 9. Hopefully I'll bring that down to about 2 over for 9 tops by the end of this summer.

I shot even par 36 in a high school match a couple years back and i didn't hit a single green. The pins were tucked that day and i remember just firing right at them the majority of the time. I made like 4or 5 ..8-10 footers to save par because i shortsided myself and chipped in on 9 for birdie to shoot 36. Funny thing is my iron play is my strong part of my game....just not that day-----made me realize how important the short game really is. :drinks:

I still remember this pretty well as it was the first tournament that I ever won. Par 71, dont remember the yardage but probably 6700 or so. On the front 9 I hit 1 green in regulation and it was the 7th hole in which I chipped in for eagle on the par 5. So I turned at 33 with 1 GIR, on the back 9 I hit every green in regulation and made 1 birdie and 3 putted the 17th for bogey. 10 greens and shot 69. I will say on the front though that I 2 putted from the fringe several times but stats wise it was only 10 GIR.

68 with 8 greens, 20 putts. Made every up and down and even 3 putted once, holed out 3 times off the green. Ridiculous.

 

(9 Hole) 35 with 1 green and it was a par 5 that I hit in two. Got up and down on the other 8.

 

This is how I normally play, I mean the scrambling type. Sort of like Phil but not quite that good obviously.

Shot 78 yesterday (par 71), hit 4 greens, 2 per side. 9 bogeys, 8 pars and 1 eagle. I chipped in from about 25-30 feet on the par 5 17th for the eagle. Three "putted" from the fringe twice inside 30 feet, 27 putts. Bogeyed holes 1-5 and 10-12. Strange round overall, several holes where I should have been closer with a SW in my hand, but could only get to around 20 feet and two putt for par, or 3 putt from the fringe. Felt good that I made it in with 78 though.

74 for me but that seems like a lifetime ago. 2 under for 9 was my best in our work 9-hole league.

76 on a par72 two weeks ago in a tourney with 8GIR - a lot of good saves. On the flip side I remember playing 73 (par72 )with 17GIR a couple of years ago - pretty bad putting that time...

Just last night on my league, I shot 34 (-1) with 2 GIRs (both par 5s). Only 1 birdie.

 

I one putted every green through #8, and had a chance for bird on #9 (par 5), but just missed the putt. I really wanted that one too, as it would have been 1) 9 putts in 9 holes, and 2) only 3's and 4's on the card.

 

Granted, 3 of those missed GIRS were on the fringe, but I was a madman with the wedge and putter. My longest putt was about 12 feet!

I shot 71 with 2 GIR's. I birdied both of those along with 2 chip-in birdies and 3 bogies.
