Golf Digest vs. Golf Magazine

Is it even close?

This week, I got the latest versions of Golf Digest (GD) and Golf Magazine (GM). It never fails, I always look forward to everything in GD but GM constantly disappoints. I would cancel my subscription to GM but once in a blue moon they might have an interesting interview.

GD comes out with "The Hot List" and it is a great review of the latest and greatest equipment.
GM has the "Find you perfect set" for your handicap. What is that? Just show me the new equipment and let me decide on my own. Now this month, the "X Factor"? Well... that might be cool. We'll see.

Also, GM kills me with all the advertising for real estate or vacations or club memberships they include.

Does anybody else feel this way?

Not really. EVery other month, except for last, they've shown the new equipment. This month it's the new drivers. As for the X factor thing, take a look at those 5 stretches they have. I just started doing them and already my back and legs are less tight than they use to be.

 

I look foward to reading the articles in both. A few times they write or have something that makes me mad and shake my head (*ahem* ) but I still look foward to getting them.

 

As for the real estate and travel advertisements, you are right, those make me a little mad. Although, they are nice pictures to look at!

I feel both magazines gear towards high handicappers and recreational golfers. I'm tired of reading in both mags "Ten ways to cure your slice".

 

I bought a couple of Punk Golf mags, they are OK but I can't stand all the adds and course reviews are over in Europe.

The tips are geared towards higher handicaps, that's true, but the articles and stories they have are why I read the magazine.

I like both mags, although I don't subscribe to both I usually will be pick up one or the other ever couple of months. Whichever has the better articles/reviews/etc. that peaks my interest st the time. Most of the stuff in the mags can be found online, so that's a bonus. It's all golf, so it's all good.

I prefer Golfweek to both of them. But between the two I prefer Golf Digest.

I have a free subscription to Golf, but frankly - I can't stand either one of them.

 

My favs are GolfWeek and GolfWorld. If I need instruction - it's on the web, or I see my pro.

this month's golf digest took me 5 minutes to read, cover to cover. 15 drivers on the hot list? i think every company is represented. nike slingshot irons, editor's choice? what a joke. and GD has plenty of advertising, and that golf channel viewer's guide is useless.

 

at least golf magazine had an interview with greg norman and one with luke donald. i think GM held my attention for 30 whole minutes. neither magazine is fantastic, but i prefer golf magazine.

Both have good info. G/D might have better equipment aricles, like Hot List, but I did enjoy best clubs for you handicap in G/M. They are both Golf related, I have no personal preference.

I get both magazines, I am dropping my sub to GD. I think GM does a little better job of trying to reach low handicappers (although neither does a great job.) And GM has Feherty's column which for me is a bonus.

I get GM, GD, Golf Tips and Todays Golfer (Britain). All I want to read are the equipment reviews. I can't get enough of them. Each has a yearly preview that I refer back to thru the year. Golf Magazine's equipment issue used to be my favorite but they seem to review fewer and fewer clubs each year. My resolution this year is to avoid any instuctional articles. Just screws me up.

I buy both because I am a ho but I dont get a lot out of the instruction section. The best sections are the travel and the pro swing sequences. I do like when they do short game or recovery shot instruction. I always like to read those and brush up. Otherwise you've got guys giving tips for different types of swings. A lot of the time, the tip is going to do me more harm than good. I wish they had a system where they would state this tip is good for a specific type of swing and not good for anoher type of swing. I believe it was GD that ran the article a while ago breaking down the tour swings into about 5 different categories. It would be great if they use that as a benchmark when giving tips.

Slightly off topic, but an amazingly little known fact- you can get 3 year subscriptions to both magazines for about $5-$6 each on EBay. I subscribe to both, and I know I paid less than $12 total- at that price, just David Feherty makes GOLF magazine worthwhile, and likewise, just reading "My Shot" in GD.

 

All the equipment plugs and the 7000th David Leadbetter tip on longer drives is just gravy.

I agree. Golfweek is best, then Golf Digest, then Golf Magazine. I LOVE Golf week. It has an awesome tournment recap and a great tour section. The best thing about Golf Digest is the What's in the bag section, other than that, a good interview here and there, but the rest of the stuff is crap.

 

Go with Golfweek, you will love it. Also, it comes every week at a great price!

What about that GM where they tried to tell everyone about how to be cool? What isn't cool is when a gofl magazine tries to tell you how to be cool. Did anyone see the page on snappy comebacks? One of the editor's 8th graders must have written that.

 

Also, I agree 100% with golfchicago's comment on the instuction articles doing more harm than good. The X factor in GM? That is a prime example of something that can do serious damage to someone who doesn't understand completely...I bet when the snow melts here (Chicago), all the high handicaps who read that are going to be spinning off the planet with that hip turn thing. Come on!

I like both magazines as they each offer a different perspective. The GD vs. GM is akin to the Car & Driver vs. Motor Trend question posed on the car forums I read.

 

I just read the mags for fun anyway, as I love golf. I dont treat each months issue of GD or GM as a "golf Bible".

Golf digest is main golf mag i read then if i have nothing better to do go out and get a golf magazine

I used to feel like Golf Digest was better but lately, Golf magazine has been getting pretty good. Arent they the same company though?

To me and this is strictly my opinion...both are pretty lame. Their "hot list" are always filled with only the big companies that advertise the most with them and picked by an editorial panel that gets their paycheck from the magazine which makes money by selling those big company ads...I know I know...pretty cynical :cheesy: Not impartial enough. You want to see the best equipment? Get a japanese golf magazine where they only feature that equipment that performs in actual independent test. The public here in the US believe all too readily an editorial panel that says best or hottest. GD, I can say, does have better instructional than GM. GM is pretty much fluff with way too much travel stuff.

True, the hotlist is a bunch of crap and the tips run you around in circles. As far as the Japanese mags, i wish i could read Japanese because i know for a fact their reviews are crazy thorough...

Golf Digest is so much better than GM.

I think Golf Digest may be a little better, however, David Feherty's articles and insights make Golf Magazine worth while. Also they do have some good equipment reviews when they get around to them.

I subscribe to Golf Magazine, Golf Digest and Golf Tips.

Golf Tips is the best of the bunch!!!

Fewer advertisement and alot more useful

game improvement tips than the others.

its the best golf publication out there.. NO instruction. It has all the news on tour, news on equipment... the stuff that we all REALLY care about... Great golf stories, amateur stories, equipment stories.. Its weekly and it will be the last golf publication you subscribe to!!

 

Its written for better golfers who don't want instruction, but just want to know everything behind the scenes golf.. Its like this website but in print!!!

 

its the best, but its subscription only not on newstand.
