Triggs Memorial

A Donald Ross Gem in Providence, Rhode Island
I played Triggs today very early. I've been wanting to get out there for a while. Looked at the site, heard some good things about the course and wow, was I surprised. This place is probably the best True public course I've ever played. Condition wise, it was spectacular for a public course that has a lot of play. It's a classic Donald Ross design with beautiful putting surfaces and bunkering. I took about 25 great pics, which I'll post over the next couple of days. I was a single and hooked up with 3 retired RI guys who were great to play with. I can't say enough about this place, it was a great experience. I know they say you could have a 5 hr round, but luckily we were off right before 7 and were done before 11. Pics to be posted soon. I'd highly recommend playing Triggs if you live in the RI area or the Boston area. It's also a bargain.

What I really like most about the course, besides it's a Ross and the great conditioning, was it has so many great driving holes. I'm going to try and get back there again by the end of the summer.

Don't forget Shennecosset in Groton if you want to do a Ross 2-fer. Great muni golf at a reasonable price. Although it has three non-Ross holes, 2 of them are fantastic.

As for Trigg, as Ross fan, Trigg is on my "list' of places to play. I have heard great things.

Triggs is great. It was neglected for a while but over the years has made a great comeback. I think playing early on a Wednesday is why you had a sub 4 hour round; hit it on the weekend and 5 hours is standard. That said, it is nice to have this great public course so close by.

Man, I couldn't figure out what hole the 2nd pic was, drove me nuts. Then I realized it was #13. Looks so flat in the pic and you must have been standing in the fairway bunker, lol. I've never had that clear a shot at it, don't think you really could. I'm usually hitting a cut 5W or 3i in. Easy to hit in 2 but tough to 2 putt. #14 is one of my favorite par 3's around. Just an 8 or 9i off the blues but long is dead, short is bunker, might be able to see top of stick if you're lucky.

3rd pic is #5, barely out of drivable range for me but a nice high cut and wedge make that the most birdiable on the course for me. 4th pic is #2, longest GD 412yd. hole I've ever seen. I think that's been mismeasured as I usually hit driver-6i, which is usually good for about 440-450.

So how'd you do? I shot my best score there last time out. 83 off the blues. I pitched in for bird on 9. Then on 18 I yanked a drive left into the trees. Hit a huge draw with a 3iron onto the back of the green and chipped in for bird again.

ezra,

thanks for the play by play of my photos. I do appreciate it, that was cool. I played from the back tees and shot 80. I hit a few erant tee shots on the front and shot 42 on the front. Then 10 thru 13 I went on a tier and birdied 3 of the 1st 4 holes on the back. I coulda been about 78, but made a double coming in. That par 5 which you said you couldn't figure out which pic it was, I hit my tee shot over the corner bunker and had about 180ish for my second shot. I was in the fway, but took that pic from the rough. The 2nd shot angle is tough, where your really lined up left of the green, i hit a 5 iron , which i pulled bad and went left of the green, but managed to get up and down. I'm totally addicted to this course and hope to get back there over the next few weeks.

The 2nd hole is also one of the best par 4's I've played in a long long time. The Tee shot is great, although I wasn't in good position off the tee and bogied it like I did no 1. It took me a while to get going.

btw- hitting your 2nd shot on the 13th par 5 from about 180 yds out could possibly be the prettiest views I've ever had. You feel like your playing a classic Ross like Pinehurst. I might just have to get back there just to hit that shot over.

NOTE TO THE MARSHALS:

This course is in RI. Can you move it to the New England folder?

Thanks.

Played Triggs again today.

Weather: 70 starting out, went to 85 really quick. Course condition: Superb, getting ready for a mini tour event next week.

What can I say. I'm in Love with this place. Finally played good too!, hooked up with two cool local guys and a mini tour player. It was one of those days you wait for.

Mods, - this course is in New England, can you move it out of Midwest and put it in NE.

thx.
