Palm Springs

[Turbs]

Hi there, we (a group of buddies) are heading down to Palm Springs January 18-25, 2009 and we are looking for some ideas. We would like a couple of mid to high end courses as well as must plays, we will play as many tracks as we can. Any and all sugestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks for all your help! Cheers Turbs

Probably an obvious choice, but PGA West LaQuinta would be a must play for me. I played it and had a ball. It felt like a links layout from what I remember with all those fairway bunkers. Indian Wells is the second choice for me.

I love to stay at LaQuinta also. They have some very nice courses there.

Plenty of top notch tracks to play during the day, and if you don't get your fill, the Indio Municipal course (Par 54 3000ish yard Par 3 course) is fully lit and open until 10pm.

 

Keep in mind the Chrysler Classic will be going on at the time, knocking a few courses out of your possible rotation.

Courses that are a definite must play (that you actually can play of course) here in the desert are:

 

Indian Wells Golf Resort - Celebrity Course

 

Desert Willow Golf Resort - Firecliff

 

La Quinta Resort - Mountain Course

 

And while its dark and you can't golf, don't forget to hit the Beerhunter - Stuft Pizza - and Arnold Palmers at one point or another during the trip - all great places to get a bite to eat and a drink...

Where is the best practice facility in Palm Springs/Desert?

Of all the ranges I've been to associated with golf courses, I like the range at the Marriot Shadow Ridge the best. It has a seperate wedge range and its not as crowded as the range is at PGA West Stadium. I'm not familiar with stand alone ranges there in the desert.

There's a practice range on Fred Waring in Palm Desert. It's lighted and has grass as well as mats.

All of the resort ranges are good. Desert Willow stands out to me as one of the best. As far as stand alone ranges, I can only name one, but it isn't worth mentioning.

What about courses that are reasonably priced? I am out there for 10 days and am going to be playing on my own, where do you guys suggest?

If you can score either Indian Wells course for $59 is the best deal I have seen......they post Hot Email deals 6 or 7 days out. The problem I have is that email comes at like 2 am to me and the time is gone even if I get up by 4 am.

Other then that, I suggest the Casino Course, Eagle Falls M-Thur for $79, Tera Lago North has some early deals too.

What I have learned is, most pretty fair priced courses have later tee times, generally very slow play and it is hard to get 18 in at times because of the 5+ hour rounds. Also, the courses are not very good for the money condition wise.

The Classic is $90 and was in super shape.....about $11 more but well worth it if the wind does not blow. Avoid the really cheap ones on and resort style courses if you can.

Perfect I appreciate the heads up, the price on Indian Wells is incredible. Would you classify Indian Wells as one of those slow/bad shape courses or is it a bit of an anomaly?
