Fake ProV's?

need some feedback on these babies...
Bought from Ebay, seller with good feedback located in Canada. Before I go to the next level on this, I would love some opinions on these.

What I notice is that some of the dimples have a rough feel to them (tiny burrs), the stampings are thin and some have flaked, the alignment marker is not centred to the Titleist stampings, and the Titleist stampings don't match eachother in height (hard to get a pic of)

Real or Fake?

Yes, those are fake. The alignment linge goes along what Titleist calls the "staggered wave parting line," which, in a sense appears gives a real Titleist a seamless look. Yours clearly has a seam just after the v1.

I know some of these companies refinish ProVs. I have read a description that indicates that they strip them and refinish them, sometimes clear coat them. I can't imagine that the stampings on a refinished ball would be like new. Are these refinished?

From my understanding a ball that has been refinished will have a stamp saying so.

Fake fake fake. And also watch out if you buy your balls at Target. The Pro-v's in there look more like these than the real deal. The Titleist stamp is more bold (a-la the NXT Tour's and stuff like that) instead of the skinny font they use on the real deal Pro-V's. Good luck getting this situation resolved though!

I seriously doubt target would carry fake anything.....that's stretching it a bit don't you think?

The balls at Target are real Pro V1, they are refinished. They are not refinished by Titleist. Refinished stampings are not going to be identical to factory stampings and the stampings will never, ever be in the same place as they were from the factory. The finish is not as good, they feel very slick to the touch, like a distance ball. When you hold a ProV in your hand and rub your thumb across the surface, it feels a little grippy, there is a slight tackiness to the cover. This tackiness is missing from the refinished ProV balls. You can never be certain of the condition of a ball before it was refinished. I would much rather buy mint condition used ProV balls than refinished.

The balls Brad bought appear to be in a real box. Since refinished balls are not sent in an original ProV box, the issue may well be that Brad paid for new ProV balls but was sent low quality used balls that were very poorly refinished.

From my understanding a ball that has been refinished will have a stamp saying so.

I have never seen one that was not stamped refinished, but if someone is trying to pass off a refinished ball as new, I doubt they would stamp it as refinished.

Ebay is a very tricky place to buy golf equipment. Good seller feedback on ebay is not as important as negative feedback. If a seller has even a little negative feedback, calculate that it is a fraction of the negative feedback that they probably should have. Until recently buyers were very hesitant to leave negative feedback because sellers would threaten to retaliate with negative feedback. It was a seriously flawed system that led to unscrupulous sellers getting away with murder while maintaining almost 100% positive feedback.

Ebay has changed it so sellers can no longer leave negative feedback for buyers, buyers can now feel free to leave the feedback a seller actually deserves, be it good or bad. This does make good sellers vulnerable to nut job buyers, but the abuse of the old system was massive, ebay had to do something.

  • 4 weeks later...

A buddy of mine bought some Pro-V1's off ebay and when he got them, he asked me to take a look. What I did (before I even looked at the ball) was grab one of my sleeves of ProV1's and looked at the box itself. The printing on my box was much more clear, much more bold, and made of a higher quality paper.

Then I looked at the balls and they looked very similar to the ones you have posted above. They were extremely hard (almost like a Top Flite when bounced on concrete). I could scrape the wording off with my keys. I told him to file a complaint. He ended up getting his money back from PayPal, but these look like the ones he got. Check the box.

My guess it that it is an older DT or Pinnacle gold.

Reasons why they are fakes. Lets call it CSI Titleist.

1.) The cover looks like surlyn instead of Urethane Elastomer.

2.) The dimples are the wrong pattern and size. That dimple pattern (392 icosahedral) was used on older Titleist models and some pinnacle models. The current ProV uses a modified version of the 392 icosahedral pattern consisting of larger dimples with some smaller dimples to fill in the surface gaps created by using a larger dimple pattern. It is now called something like high coverage 392.

3.) Side stamping and label are in the wrong spot and follow on the wrong axis. Also this ball has a seam. The ProV with this stamp doesn't have a highly visable seam.

4.) The stamp font is broken, thick, with smudged looking edges. This would automatically label this as a practice ball and would be marked accordingly. The current proV labels all their x-outs as practice.
