Focus on the front of the ball (nearest the hole)for cleaner shots. Works for me.

When chipping and putting; visualize how hard you would have to toss the ball to get it to the hole and then hit it that hard.

If I had to pick one thing that can be summarized in a tip, it would be a putting tip from Tina Mickelson. It's similar to the "keep your head down until you hear the putt drop", but that one doesn't work for me:

 

Put a ball marker under your ball when practicing. Make the stroke, and keep your head down until your eye refocus on the ball mark.

 

When I play, I then keep my head down until I refocus on a single blade of grass.

I remember getting yelled at for beating balls, I learned to hit every shot even practicing like it mattered

 

Probably learning about subconcious golf was the best tip or thought.

 

Then again there are others.

"Don't follow a bad shot with another bad shot." That's how you avoid the huge number. For example, if you hit your tee shot into trouble, don't try to extricate yourself with the low percentage shot. Take your medicine.

So far, not a single tip has worked consistently well for me. Some tips worked for a while, but they were replaced by others.

 

For example:

Dave Pelz said "Do not change your swing, use different clubs (wedges)", and it worked for a while, but I had a mis-judgement problem because of having too many options.

My golf instructor said: "Do not change clubs, master a single club for your short game". It's working very well now and I use 56 degree wedge for everything 60 yards and in.

 

Another example:

One my friend told me "Do not control the distance of your putt by changing the backswing distance, use minimal back swing so that it can reduce directional problem" It worked for a while, but I had distance control trouble.

My golf instructor said: "Putt it like you are a pendulum" and it works very well now.

 

So I think there are too many options (tips) out there, finding one that works for you might be the life time quest in this game.

Well, Haney isn't the only one who says this but the way he describes it, the club manufacturer has already helped you to determine ball position. If you place the sole of the club in your hand at eye level flat, and you examine the angle of the shaft, that would tell you where the club head should be set behind the ball. The hands at address grip the club directly in front of your belt buckle to form the "V", and with the sole flat on the ground, you will be able to tell where the ball should be. This goes for standard shots, not specialty shots like punches or flops.

 

So, a 3 iron would look would place the ball ahead of center while the sand wedge would be a bit behind center.

 

I find this works for me as I don't have to be concerned about that detail. In actuality, I have 13 different ball positions, but I'm only concerned with the sole being flat on the ground, and that my hands are in front of my belt buckle.
