Course

Has anyone played this country club. Just received an invite for tomorrow and I am wondering what I should know before I go. I beleive it is pretty exclusive.

I played the course three years ago. When you walk around out there it feels like it could be 1905. Biggest, nicest greens I've ever played...damn I'm envious!

 

It's not that tough but there are giant bunkers and trees everywhere...so keep it in the fairway at all costs.

They removed the majority of the interior trees a few years ago ala Oakmont.

There aren't trees anywhere. Wide open, but some wispy fescue to avoid. Far and Sure!

This is a storied old course, rich in history. I recall that it is the oldest 18 hole course in America. You are going to a special place. I Google Earthed it, the lack of trees is clear. Very interesting bunkering, wish I was there!

Went to school in Wheaton for four years and never ONCE got to play it.

When I worked in the biz, Chicago Golf is the only club that didn't reciprocate and let us play when we called to see if they'd let us out on a Monday. As a result, the oldest golf course I've ever played is Onwentsia in Lake Forest.

I caddied at Chicago GC for many years and still do in member events!! I have played the course 150+ rounds on Mondays and who ever said it is easy is very mistaken!! It is not a long course and has wide fairways but guests on average 3 putt 5-6 greens!! Greens are running 14-15 this summer and the course in general is very firm!! So when u take all this and add the normal 20 mph wind, it is not an easy course!! I would say it is one of the toughest courses to get on anywhere in the world!! With just 120 members the course gets a little over 7,000 rounds!! Many say it has the best set of 18 greens in the world!! It is truly a special place!!

I played there in college (on a monday of course). There were still trees there (1998), but for the most part I don't think they were really in play like the fescue was, and I don't think there were on all holes.. All I really remember was the greens were huge, it was hot as hell out, it played hard and fast with lots of undulation, and the fescue was nuts (like basically the width of the second cut at a PGA event - okay maybe a bit more, but it was very much something to fear.)

To be honest - I've payed it one time. The history is great, and that's about it.

There are many superior golf courses in the area.

I've heard this on more than one occassion. That said, I'd love to play it one day.

One of my mom's good friends is a member, but my mom won't ask her to help me out. Talk about frustrating!

My grandfather was a member for many years. Rumor is he broke the course record but never submitted the score. I've played there twice. Quite the experience. The greens are downright punishing. Sitting at the giant table in the grill room was really cool. Imagine all the greats of the game that sat there over all the years.

Unreal course! Was fortunate to play it this summer. A friend played it a week and a half ago and the greens were stimping at 15! An Augusta National member played it and putted it into the bunker on 10...twice and said they were the fasted greens he's every played.

My Mom hails from Wheaton, (as did John Belushi) when ever I head back there to visit family I run by CGC every morning. Congrats on getting the invite, you'll love it!
