Results of reshafting my 909 D2

replaced the Titleist Voodoo shaft with a Penley
Last month I bought a 909 D2 9.5 with the Titleist Voodoo S-flex. Also bought the 909 F2 with matching shaft.

My results with this driver have been very poor. I'm a 0.5 hdcp with SS around 100. Usually a pretty straight, controlled driver of the golf ball. Basically I was way wilder with this driver than any other I have. I was typically hitting BIG flares to the right, which is almost never my miss. And, I couldn't turn this thing right to left if my life depended on it, and that's rarely a difficult thing for me to do. I finally set it aside and started playing my Cleveland XLS 9.5, which I was hitting great, and dead straight. One day a week or so ago I took my 7 drivers to the range - hit them all very straight, except for the 909 - again big flares to the right. I took my pro's 909 with a 76g V2, and hit his dead straight. So, I needed to decide whether just to sell it or reshaft it.

I pulled a shaft out of my Mizuno Pro 300S II, a Penley Stealth 70 S (73g, 3.5 torque, high kickpt) and put it in the 909. Played with it today, and voila - hit it dead straight with a great moderately high but flat trajectory. Shot a very solid 70 today - 17 pars, 1 birdie, with a pretty miserable putting round. Not only did it change the shot shape and results, the sound and feel are now completely different. Before, it felt like the face was caving in at impact, and the sound was not very crisp. Now it has a very crisp click at impact with a firm solid feel. It's hard to believe it's the same head!!

I had a clubmaker do a frequency check on the Voodoo shaft and his measurement was that it was effectively a 6.8 flex - just under an X flex, according to his chart. He also went on a rant about how poor quality most of the "made for" shafts are - that they are mass-produced with much less quality control, and poorer materials and construction - matches what a lot of guys have said on these boards.

Anyway, this really does reinforce the old adage that the shaft is the engine of the golf club - it's nothing short of remarkable how different this club now is. It's now bumped my Cleveland back out of the bag! Just wanted to share that outcome...

Love the looks of this head. Good to know. Tried it with the VooDoo and wasn't impressed. I think they made a BIG mistake going with that shaft as one of their two main offerings. I doubt many people will find that it feels good or performs for them. I hit the 905R with a V2 76 stiff side by side with the D2/VooDoo and it was like night and day with my same cruddy swing. The 909 looks so much like the Cobra Speed series that I figured it had to be the shaft, 'cause I hit the speed drivers just fine.

Titleist 909 D2 Voodoo Stiff cycled at 252cpms for me.

That puts it between an R and an S flex.

Ditto for the F2.

I agree - I was ready to give up on the club but figured what the heck I'll stick this Penley in it. Glad I did. I have two 905R's - one with a YS-7 and one with the Titleist Speeder - which I gotta say that I really like! But the Voodoo just didn't work for me. I hit the 3W with the Voodoo fair, but I have hit a few crazy shots with it that just seemed to come out of nowhere. With the effort that Titleist reportedly has put into the 909 series heads, I agree that they probably will regret their choice of stock shafts - and this year it looks like most other shafts are an upcharge, which wasn't so much the case with the 905R's, if I remember correctly.

I have had mixed results with the Titleist Voodoo in my 909D3. I have also been hitting quite a few more high and right drives with mine, which is never my miss. I just ordered a Axivcore Black to put in it. I absolutely love everything about the head. I can't wait to try out the Axivcore/D3 combo.

Interesting that you're hitting the same kind of misses that I was. What are the specs on the Axivcore shaft you've ordered.

BTW, you must be a Mitch Hedberg fan, huh??? "who would throw tomatos at a band? what if the band really likes tomatos! but, who would bring tomatos to a show?" That guy was something else!!! RIP

Played the 907D2 last season with much success, very accurate with good distance. I have only played a handful of rounds with the 909D2.

First off the Voodoo made for Titleist IMHO felt very weak to flex and had to be changed out after the first three rounds. Not exactly sure what the problem was but once I had the right shaft in the 909, Grafalloy Comp NT same as the 907, I was able to compare apples to apples. The shaft change made all of the difference. Plays just like the 907 but with better sound and feel.

252 cpm at 45 inches is approx. 6.3 frequency. Although no real agreed standard , I beleive this is near the middle/high range for an S (stiff) flex. I believe the S flex frequency "range" is 5.5 to 6.5.

5" clamp and I had the grip on. You can take off ~3-4 cpms to account for the grip.

Puts is directly between a Reg and Stiff flex.

Not to change the brand your talking about, but I have the A4 with the stock Matix Stiff shaft and I'm having the same problem. Hig nad to the right, I never go to the right, even family members thought I must be sick adfter wtching drive after drivr go to the right. I am seriously thinking it must be the shaft. If anyone has any thought on this it would be appreciated. I have a BTY with Prolaunch Platinum tipped 1" in stiff that is no problem and the face is just as open as the A4. I beginning to think the "made for" shafts are not that amazing.

My Voodoo was 261 cpm (which I saw on the display) - my club repair guy said that translated to 6.8 for a 45" shaft, and he said 6.8 was near an X flex. So, it looks like mine was even a bit stiffer than yours.

you guys dont seem to realize that these shafts are not the real deal and never will be. thats why your not paying $200 more for the real thing. if you wanted the real voodoo to begin with you should have ordered it with it. i do agree with you tho however taht not one made for shaft performs the same as the real deal.

Thanks for taking the words out of my mouth ;)

The "VooDoo" that comes std is NOTHING close to the actual VooDoo

I tried a voodoo in a 909 F3, very good didn't have any titleist words on the shaft so assume this is the real shaft. The pro wants to sell it for $110 (13 degrees loft and x-stiff shaft, some guy ordered and never collected; I might buy it as my xmas present)

From the info and feedback from guys here, I would never consider a made for shaft again ; they are nothing like the real shaft and no doubt they don't go as far or with the same tight dispersion

My guess is the voodoo is mid/high kick; fine for a fw wood.

From the info and feedback from guys here, a lot of people are going to spend a whole lot more money than they need to. The MFT shaft is a GREAT shaft that fits a LOT of people. Certainly not for everybody, but no shaft is...

I would go recheck your club guys numbers.

261 cpms using a 2.5" rifle clamp would yield an approx. 7.7 Rifle equivalent flex.

I suspect he was using a 5" clamp which increases the reading by approx. 20 cpms, and would yield ~ 5.8 Rifle equivalent flex.

Either way, 261 cpms cannot get you to 6.8 Rifle flex.

I am not trying to be confrontational, only attempting to make sure you have all the correct information.

I think our resident Pro Kevin Carter is on point. Titleist has made their stock Voodoo play to a firm-stiff flex which will fit the majority of golfers out there.
