Balls you love or loathe

Like putters balls are a real feel thing.

Out of the top end balls nothing is really off my list, I will use Pro Vs, N O Ps, Cally I and IX, Srixon Z-URC. Not so struck on B330 or V1X, too harsh and fly too low.

However it is still Winter and the expensive ammo is in hibernation. Why are so many lower cost balls truly awful? I played the first few holes yesterday with a Big Bertha. Jumpy around the green and dreadful to putt with. Same with cheaper Srixons, Nikes, PTS Solo etc.

Winter weapon of choice is between HX Hot Bite and the really excellent Noodle.

What do others use when the course is like a swamp and greens are like Rice Pudding? :man_in_love:

I HATE, and I mean HATE the DT Solo's and DT Distance. Worst thing Titleist could have created. V1-X's aren't bad but I feel that they are really over rated. Personally I prefer NXT Tours (not those crap Xtreme ones they decided to throw up at us). But yeah DT Solo's are my nemesis, its like when you're walking the course and see a nice new Titleist but turn it over to see its not a Pro-V 1, I just leave it.

Of the premiums I've tried, I loathe the TaylorMade TP Black. Felt awful to me on all shots.

Should I run out of Hi-end SRIXONs and BRIDGESTONEs, I'll drop a MAXFLI without any fear!

I am pretty much a slut when it comes to playing around with iron sets but extremely choosy about golf balls. Cally iX is my first choice but when the weather is bad, or when I tend to lose a lot of ball in the fall because of the falling leaves, I go with the TopFlite D2 Feel. I was a Srixon guy for a while but its hard to find them in my area so I switched to the Callaways. For the money, it is also hard to beat a Noodle IMO.

have never ever seen what the fuss is about with Pro V1 !

spin far too much for me making my hacker's fade into a horrible slice.... when i find them on the course i always give them to playing partners .. boy do they love me ;)

Best for me is Srixon Trispeed or Precept xp3... damn goood balls imo.

Also, the new Pinnacle Platinum feel is way to soft to be a Pinnacle and plays so well in and around the greens.

I cant help but think the Titleist premium balls are only played by a lot of amateurs because they want to be 'just like a pro' ... SUCKERS!

By far the worst balls I've ever hit are the current B330's. I'm a +1.4 so I don't suck, but these balls made me suck. They're hard and clicky on all shots & on green side chips these are spinproof. I love the B330s and b330rx, but these are horrible.

That is really odd, because I find that they spin just fine on chips, even on the semi-frozen greens I play this time of year. I don't play to a +1.4, but I don't suck either. To each his own...

Hmm, It could be that all balls you're playing at the moment tend to roll out a little more seeing as you're playing on a hockey rink. Cold weather will make any ball clicky and frost will make pretty much every ball react the same. On lush greens in 72o weather they behave quite different from other tour balls. But if you like them, by all means play them.

I hate the top-flite gamer...hit it a few times and you're lucky if there's any cover left on the ball. It also feels terrible with irons. I threw my remaining ones into a pond at the end of last year. I don't discriminate against "cheaper balls" i play early morning quite a bit when it's wet. So i've used Noodle+, Pinnacle platinum feel, TaylorMade burner etc...but i just really didn't like the gamer

favorite ball is the TP reds or blacks depending on time of year

I played two round this weekend split the nines between Pro V's and Bridgestones 330 s

70's each day and mild to stiff breeze. Both morning rounds. Same course.

Lost distance on the Pro V's driver (20 yards) and irons.

Stuck well and got some nice 10' + zips on the green (twice off the green)

Softer "hit"

B330 mega distance but did not back up on any green stuck on some rolled out on others.

Balls I toss away are Rock-Flights, Pinicales, even give up ProV's due to much spin.

Balls I keep are some Callaways, Maxflies, NXT's,

Of the cheaper range I've enjoyed Bridgestone's e6+s and never really complained about lesser Nike balls outside of the powersoft, because i'd rip the shell pieces. I guess as long as I've got good feel on the greens and good shots don't tear up the cover I'll hit it.

I have never hit a Pinnacle I liked, and the Top Flight Gamer and whatever other dumb names they came up with for that series are awful for me.

But in the end, so long as I'm not hitting it sideways that day, I'll always play Nike One's over anything else. Black or Platinum depends on what I'm trying to do. Platinums for tourny's for sure. The Nikes seem to stay in good shape longer than the ProV1s.

Nike One Platinums are the puppy's privates. The nearest thing to a balata amongst the modern balls and they offer the feel and performance I'm after with 13 of the clubs - even if I am leaving a few yards on the table with a driver.

If Titleist still made the Professional I'd still be playing it now. And the old Maxfli HT was a fantastic ball until they changed the cover and ruined it.

Can't abide anything rock hard. Can't understand what the fuss is about with Srixon balls. Can't play anything from Callaway on principle.

Our greens thaw down about 3/4", so it's not quite a solid surface that I'm chipping to unless it's really early in the morning. Just as a comparison, for me an E7+ will roll 20 feet farther than a B330 on an identical chip. I've been experimenting with several balls since the first of the year, and the B330 and B330-S are quite similar. I do like both of them. :D

I like many of Bridgestone's offerings and play the B330S and E5+.

When I read about the B330RX I thought this would be the ball for me...premium performance and designed for average swing speeds.

Man do I dislike the RX...I lost distance on all clubs and it felt like a marshmellow off the tee. AND I paid a premium price for it to boot.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'm not a great golfer, but I really hate most low end golf balls, particularly the 'distance' balls. I could definitely use more distance, but I have enough problems with distance control on the greens without using hard, jumpy balls. I love NXT Tours and HxHot Bites for the way they play, but hate how fast they scuff. I can't get more than one or two holes out of them without getting my thumbnails filled with white shavings. I really didn't get along with the Zip which was a surprise to me given how other people raved about them. For me I found that while I liked the soft feel off of my irons and their durability, I couldn't get used to the way they felt off the putter and as much as other people talk about their greenside performance, I had a really bad time with them rolling off the green. Right now I've got around 2 dozen balls that I don't really want to play including sleeves of maxfly noodle longest, callaway cb1 (from costco) and maxfli fire (never bought into the hype about these either, though I love the tour fire). That said, when I start playing mudball golf in around 6 weeks (I hope) I've got enough balls that I don't mind leaving in plugged lies in the middle of the fairway.

Yes, I've got a long history of low end bal ho-ing. I've finally come to the conclusion that I'm better off stocking up on tour balls when they're on clearance since they generally last much longer than the lower-priced balls with similar performance.

The only ball I will put in play is a Pro V1x.

I know what kind of spin I'll get on irons and chips and that's more important to me than a few extra yards or straighter flight. I figure if I put a horrible swing on a golf ball, then I should be punished.
