Best ball for under $25

My nephew is starting to play golf and of course he wants to play a pro V. What is a good ball in the 20 to 25 dollar range ?

 

I have always played the pro v1 and really don't read the magazines or keep up with new stuff.

If he is just starting, the Nike Power Distance Soft. That or one of the bridestone + series depending on his ball flight.

Go and check lostgolfballs.com, o he can try premium golf balls at incredible prices, my ball of choice in that range would be Titleist NXT Tour or Taylormde Burner TP. If the kid is new to the game a firmer or distance ball would be a better fit for most new golfers.

If he is just starting, play cheap balls. Eventually they will get lost. For a cheap ball I like the Pinnacle Exception and the Top Flite Gamers. I LOVE golf and could afford to, but there is no way in hell I'll pay $40+ for a dozen golf balls. With that said, I am always a happy camper when I find Pro V-1s. Another ball I like is the Nike Mojo.

Anyone used the new Top-Flite Gamer Ball?

 

its supposed to be the best ball for the money according to Golf Digest (around $25), and is also a 2-piece which will be nice when he graduates to the Pro-V1

 

Not to mention the golf balls he will find on the course (givin it is a slow day)

 

I am lucky enough to live a min away from 2 different golf courses and when they open up in early March with NOBODY on the course im in the weeds racking up golf balls...At home i have a 5gal bucket of nothing but Titleist and shoe boxes full of Nike, Callaway, Taylor Made and a 50 gal drum full of everything else like Top-Flite, Hagen, Ect, Ect So im set on golf balls for years (just something to think about, since i know golf is an expensive hobby)

In the past few weeks, I'm become a big fan of the Srixon AD 333. I can't tell the difference between this and a ProV1. Also, I find them to be very durable, which is the biggest complaint about the Top Flite Gamer. They can be had for around $20-25 on the net.

If you're trying to get to $25 but keep "almost" premium ball performance I'd recommend Burner TP or Bridgestone E5+

under $25....there's a ton now.

 

best under the radar pick for me would be the Nike Mojo. can be had at Dick's/Target/Walmart some golf stores for $19/2 dozen. do a search in the golf balls section and you'll see what I'm talking about. I always keep a box in the golf closet. It spins less, goes straighter then a V1 or the like, and it's pretty durable.

 

still on Nike...the Nike One Black or Platinum can be had for $24.99 if you can find them. great ball!! was my go to for a long time til I got sick of searching for them. when I do see them I'll pick up a few boxes.

 

Vapor...ok ball. at this price point I still prefer the NOB or Mojo.

 

Tour, and Tour D...both perform similarly to the NOB/NOP but it's a bit more money. Nike's running a deal for $59.99 for 2 dozen. and Taylormade is also running a special still. $55 for 2 dozen of TP Red/Black, $45 for Burner TP, $35 for regular Burner.

I rarely spend over $20 on a dozen. If I'm buying new, I really like the TM burners (red box). They fly pretty far and actually have a bit of bite on the green. They won't really spin back, but I usually don't have them roll out more than a few feet. The nike power distance softs aren't too bad, and neither are the D2 feel, but they're both a bit shorter than the burner with about the same stopping power. They do check slightly better on chips, but not much. I like the D2 better than the gamer, but that's just me.

 

Going the used route isn't too bad either. You'll get a better ball for the money, but you need to look for the free shipping deals or buy in bulk to really make it worthwhile. My favorite source for balls right now is my local Play It Again. They have deals with a few local courses and have a few big bins of balls for $0.25 each. They pick out the good pro v's, but with a little patience and digging you can find a plethora of good balls. I got 56 ranging from power softs to srixon z-urs for $15.98 the other day. I'm set for a while :)

In that price range I'd say the Taylor Made Burner TP or the Srixon Tri-Speed. Both great balls in the $25.00 range.

I picked up 5 dozen of the TaylorMade TP Black balls for GPPGolf when they had their special a few weeks ago ($19.99 / dozen). They seem to have some decent specials every once in a while so I just grab 5 or 6 dozen which seems to last me a few months or so (or at least until the next special comes out).

Great ball for a beginner is the U-Tri Tour

 

Also I would recommend going to Sports Authority and getting a dozen or 2 Tommy Armour Tour balls. I got em for $11/dozen and its a 3 piece ball that preformed as good as any other ball in the $20-25 range.

 

My last recomendation and a little more pricey is Srixon Soft Feel, I love that ball and it can be had for $20/dozen.

 

I would get a sleeve of each (just take one out of the box and it should ring up at the sleeve price, try em out and see whats best.

You won't hear much love for them, but I believe the best cheap ball out there is the Noodle - longest. It has long distance, and while they may not always back up, they will stop just as well as any non-premium ball out, especially for the swing a new player puts on them. One of the mags ball test articles, the spin rate for the noodle was right up there, much better than the higher priced non-premium ball.
