TaylorMade Burner TP LDP Best Ball for the money?

Recommended Posts

I got to play with a launch monitor last night to get a really good look at the way the TM Burner TP performs. At a launch angle of 30.3* It was spinning around 7250 rpms. I tested this against the Cally Tour I, Ix and Titleist Pro V1, V1x. I found that the Burner TP out spins the Cally Tour Ix by 500 rpm and is the same as the Tour I. The Burner TP spins less than the Titleist balls, the V1x spun 300 rpm faster and the V1 spun 700 rpm faster. Now for the spin off the driver. The Burner TP averaged only 67 rpms of sidespin. I was floored by this. All the premium balls spun on average in the 200-275 rpms of side spin which added 4 yards off of center on the not so perfect hits. It doesn't sound like much but that's the difference between being in the light rough and being in the really deep stuff.

Just for giggles I laid open my 60* lob all the way and hit the Burner TP. It launched at 49* with 10,120 rpms of back spin. Nuts!

More or less my results confirm/back up what Golf Digest got for data for the 2009 Hot List. So if you are looking for a ball that is low spin off the driver but gives you tour level control around the green at a non-premium price try the Burner TP.

Cram it with walnuts!

Yes they are a good ball for the money.

Best ball of the Mid Level Balls

More durable than NXT Tour and the Callaway Hot Bite with similar performance.

If I had to buy balls I would use them but I got some Z Stars and Tour I's for as gifts and havent used them up yet

67 rpms of side spin sounds impressive....but that's about 1 revolution a second. Given that a ball is in the air for say 5 seconds tops - that's an extra 5 spins in the air. 240 rpms would equate to 4 spins a second or a total of 20 spins. Result? pretty insignificant - unless someone knows different.
so i like to play the z star, and callaway I because of the soft feel, but i dont like it when it spins back on full wedge shots. I would like them to just stop, with minimum spin backwards. will these balls be similar in feel? and will they still stop on wedge shots, just not spin back as much, if at all??
The Burner TP might spin just as much.

I recall that in the 2008 Golf Mag test the Burner TP actually spun more off a wedge than the Tour I and Tour ix (Z Star's were not out then)

The non-TP Burner ball will spin less and has a soft feel.

The firs time I played the Burner TP I wa very very impressed, and has been my gamer since.

But there is a better ball for the money is you can still find it: MAXFLI TOUR FIRE

It is EXACTLY the same ball as the TM Burner TP (TM jut changed the name this year to charge more :D), and it can be found for less than $20 a dozen in most places it i still on inventory...

I know it's the same (minus the LDP), but does anyone know if it plays the EXACT same way, as the Tour Fire 'floats' way too much for me on the shorter irons.

The Burner TP is a real nice ball. However, I've been picking up the Nike One Vapor for $19/doz and find it is very comparable. If you actually gave me one or the other with the markings off, I'd have a hard time telling the difference.

That was on full shots with a 56* wedge with one set of swing parameters. You could see very different results with a different swing. Also keep in mind that the big difference in spin will be a short chips and around the green which is where no surlyn ball can compare to urethane.

Here's an example: In GA when I was fit for the R11, on my longest drive with a Penta was 254 yards. Pretty good, actually very good for me. It was pretty consistent. I got to the course and put my ball back into play (Burner TP). Longest drive? 280 yards. Think of it as a slightly better NXT Tour that spins just a touch less, but can drastically limit sidespin, hence, longer straighter shots.

Put it in play for a round, then when you love it, go back and buy $60 more of them. Yes. The ball it comes close to for me is the old TP Red w/LDP.

GREAT BALL

The best way to think of the Burner TP LDP is a Pro V1x type ball for lower swing speeds. I don't want a ton of spin on my iron/wedge shots as I like to play the ball to release a bit, but playing low spin balls like the V1x, Tour ix, B330 etc I feel like I lose so much distance because I can't effectively compress the ball.

The Burner TP LDP is everything I was hoping the Bridgestone RX series would be, without the RIDICULOUS price tag. So upset that Taylormade axed the ball this season

How would these compare to the TF Gamer V2?
Fairly similar. The NXT Tour, Burner TP, Gamer v2, HX Bite, Trispeed Tour all perform similarly. Personally I found the Burner TP and NXT Tour to be slightly longer off the tee and the Trispeed slightly shorter with the most greenside spin. Again I stress that there were only slight differences and that the choice between these balls would come down to feel and personal preference.

They went big box store with these, so you can still find them. The replacement (Burner Tour) is NOT as good. They took a step backwards with this one IMO.
