"Beautiful sticks...I have always wanted to find a nice set of Ram Tour Grinds. How do they perform for you?
"
errr ... ummmmm... i haven't actually been game to play with them...!!!
only hit them a few times for fun and they felt very difficult for me.
been spending my time fiddling shafts between the Hogans and Mizunos trying to find the best feel for me.
actually i posted this next pic on another thread, here it is again.

In Australia i remember these being a players club back in the 70'2-80's (not sure) in Tom Watson'd prime I think.
anyone know more about the possible age of these ones.
shaft labels (2 of them) say:
1. Precision FM 5.5 - Brunswick Golf.
2. Registered - TG 02315 - 255 Cycle.
actually found them in Bangkok last year, in very good condition so I couldn't say no even just for collecting.

just for fun here's a couple of clubs i found yesterday in a thrift store.

i have a vague memory of this sort of insert many years ago.
and the Maxfli i haven't seen before.
I had a set of original Maxfli Australian Blades which have become lost among family members,
i really should try to hunt them down.

Very Nice. 86-88 for the Frequency Matched. The Vibration Matched was 82-86.

Tom Watson played the 1979/80-82 model (Golden Ram and tour grind out on the toe)- so did a slew of other tour pro's who weren't even on staff - or so I was told.

Off the top of my head, Player, Trevino, Seve, Floyd, Price have at one time or another played Ram TGs.

I am saving up for a nice set of blades even though everyone says I have no business playing them. I feel like they will really help me become a better tempo player and ball striker than my comp ez set. I picked up a 72 Wilson staff fluid feel button back five iron out of the $5 barrel and it has already helped my swing. Hit a set of Cleveland CG1 in the store the other day and loved them. Never experienced that kind consistent distance and feedback before. I knew with every shot where the ball had made contact with face. Will make a good Christmas present to myself I think.

Mr. Rob,

I have three sets of Staff blades due to arrive in the next few days.

Wilson Staff Tour Blade (1978-80) -- 4-9 + JP Custom Grind PW -- Stiff Dynamic Shafts

Wilson Staff Tour Blade (line over) Fluid Feel (1984-86) -- 3-PW -- Stiff Dynamic Shafts

Wilson Staff Tour Blade (line over) Fluid Feel (1984-86) -- 3-PW -- Regular Dynamic Shafts

All sets are matching and look to be in great shape for their age. I'll be gaming the regular flex set, but if you're interested in either of the two stiff-shafted sets, send me a PM. I can take some photos as soon as they arrive and send the photos on to you to see if you're interested. From what I can tell, I'll be looking to get more than $50 for each set, but less than $100. It's too early to tell exactly what they're worth. The stiff sets will go onto eBay if you aren't interested in either of them.

Go to ironfinder.com to see exactly which Staff models I'm talking about.

Some nice old sets coming there W/S. I will pick up a classic set or two someday, most likely next year. I love the looks and lines of the these old Wilsons but being new to blades, I am going to go with the Cleveland CG1's I hit the other day. I just get a better sense of where the ball is making contact on the face with them than I do the Staffs. Would love to do both but I have to add extensions, oversize grips and lie adjustments which tacks on 80 bucks to any set I buy. So just can't do both right now. Nice of you to offer tho friend. Enjoy them!

When I'm play'n well I'll pull the Mizuno's out of my bag and put in my set of 78 Wilson Staff Tour blades, 1-pw. Definetly a different feel from the Mizuno's; very solid vs "buttery". They also seem a little more like precise tools compared to todays irons. I think its b/c of the long hosels, heavier heads, old lofts (pw is 50*) and narrow soles, but that is just my perception.

I played the CG2s for a little while and they had too much offset for me. The CG1's are a solid set of irons, if you buy them from a retail store. A few years back, when they first hit the market, some Chinese factories were making some difficult-to-tell-the-difference clones that flooded eBay. I'm sure you're buying the irons through the proper channel, but I thought I would mention this anyway.

The best thing one can do to save money is re-grip one's own clubs. This saves me about $30-$40 a year. That's enough savings to buy a vintage set of blades!

slightly off topic ....
i got a message from a member asking about how i do my pics i post.
i used to be a photographer but these are done very simply on my verandah and the finished in Photoshop.
there are other, slightly more complicated, ways of taking clean looking pics without using Photoshop.
if a few people are interested i could do up a tutorial on how to do this.
a pic for fun.

The first set of irons that I was able to buy as a kid (cutting grass and selling golf balls I fished out of the ponds) were a set of First Flight The Standard (pictured above in a post) 1-PW. I wore those things out. Then I got a set of Mizuno MP32s (1-PW) which I have had the loft readjusted a few times from hitting so many balls. I went through a recent phase of game improvement irons (Callaway FTs) which never felt right to me. I just traded a few hours of website work for a set of Callaway X Forged irons. I love these things.

I think growing up and playing most of our lives with blades made us better players and better ball strikers... My opinion.

Currently own 6 sets of irons and 5 are blades

Mizuno MP-33 (S-300)
Srixon Pro-100 (S-300)
Maruman Conductor 31-EX (Regular)
Maruman Conductor 31-EX (Stiff)
Golfsmith Pro Forged (S-300)
Also have a Ram FX Tour Grind 1-iron that is in my driving range bag.

The MP-33s are the gamers right now. I just love the 4 and 5-irons on that set.

Add Gene (The Machine) Littler, Jim (Distance) Dent, Peter Jacobsen, and Calvin Peete.
Their LH models were excellent translations of their RH ones... Have both the Golden Ram Tour Grinds and the FX2 sets.

I am by no means an oldie (30) but I am currently gaming '87 (i think?) Spalding tour editions, courtesy of my lovely wife who stopped at a tag sale and snagged 3-pw set for $25. In fantastic condition and I love them! Also the first blade I have ever hit. I really think I am on the blade train for good. Once I get power back (curse Snowtober!!) I will post pics.

I'm 49 and hitting the MacGregor MT Pro M Blades. I also have a set of Walter Hagen component blades made by Hoffman in the late 90's that are patterned after a late 70's model Wilson Staff that I hit every now and again. Can't feel what I'm doing with cavities no matter how hard I try to make them work.

I'll drink to these blades too. I've got the 1980 TGs in the bag. They're pure sex.
